The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.

Really cute train /tram station. There's places to eat and shop in and around the station. The station has a free "kimono forest" as well as foot bath right on the platform. What a cute amazing find. It was nice to soak your feet in the foot bath after a long walk around Arashiyama. Buy your ticket at the information booth and they'll give you a small towel which you can keep. There a tap to wash your feet before and after the soak. The train station has free Wi-fi so you can soak while researching your next stop or posting your pics. Unisex and family friendly.

As mentioned about the Town itself which is frequented mainly by tourists, there are some locals as well and this is the place to mix with them as well

This is an unusual station as it also has the ‘Kimono Forest’ which shows off the great patterns that they have in the kimonos in Japan

Do try the ‘Foot Spa’ as well as this is just so relaxing and we all loved just sitting there and soaking our tired feet after visiting all the sites

Frozen drinks and yoghurts are also great as well at the entrance to the station

The small train station is located in the center of the town. There are many souvenir shops and eating houses inside. Particularly there is a "kimono alley" by the side of the train tracks for viewing by tourists. Really a lovely place welcome by tourists.

I don’t normally review a train station, but as you leave the station on the left hand side near the exit you will see a hot food stand. TRY THE PORK DUMPLINGS ! Holy Christ are they good! And I’m not a dumpling person !

Unfortunately we came here on a Saturday (but I can imagine it's the same on any day), the place was packed with tourists and visitors...

But nevertheless it was nice to see the town and the surrounds whilst we were in the area..

Plenty of eateries and shops to spend your money

I had my head buried in a guidebook, reading about my destination — Tenryu-Ji Temple— when admiring exclamations filled the Randen Railway car. It had entered Arashiyama Station, the end stop for the temple, and an amazing kimono forest greeted passengers. Hundreds of cylinder-shaped poles, about 6.5-feet high, displayed textile pieces, dyed in the traditional Kyo-Yuzen way. See-through coverings offered protection from the elements and a clear view of the colorful art within.

Surprised and captivated, I temporarily forgot about the temple and examined many of the poles. Some clustered together in small groups while others flanked a long, curved lane that ended at a small pond. Thirty-two different stunning textile patterns are featured. The installation becomes even more magical between dusk and 9 p.m. when the poles become illuminated by internal LED lights. I spent about 15 minutes admiring this attraction again in the dark before returning to Downtown Kyoto.

Over the years, I have been in countless railway stations throughout Japan. Arashiyama now tops my “most pretty” list, thanks to the installation’s designer, Yasumichi Morita. The work went in during 2013 as part of a major station renovation.

This place is kind of a tourist trap. Things are more expensive and provides nothing interesting or worth buying. The fish/prawn or whatever fried cakes they offer is horrible. Don't buy.
