This temple is pretty spectacular. It is staggering the amount of timber that went into to building this magnificent structure. The detail is just amazing. Photography is not permitted inside the temple. Wear shoes that can easily be taken off and put back on as...More

Need to do a bit of travel research of this Temple as there are just too many of shrines and temples in religious-rich Kyoto. Not frequently featured in most guide books but東本願寺is a gem to us (after the visit)! It is within 10 minutes’ walk...More

Not a place featured in most of the guide books. It's free admission and there are no crowds of tourists. It's a nice walk around the different temple halls. Take the time to read the inspiring quotes on the walls of the temple.

After more than 2 weeks in Japan, the free temples seem to be the most amazing ones. Moreover they are not crowded. Magnificent huge wooden buildings with beautiful bouddhist flags everywhere. The hotels are very lovely too. Close to Tokyo Train Station. Can be visited...More

After visiting several temples the previous day, we stayed in the central area of town on a rainy Monday and did some wandering. As other reviewers have noted, this place is only 5 minutes walk from the main railway station, and it's free. However, there's...More

Next to Kyoto Station. Free. Supposedly the largest wooden temple but Todaji temple in Nara has the same claim. Not crowded. Lovely massive wooden temple. Very beautiful. Was able to sit on the Tatami and watch the prayers going on. They give you a plastic...More

We visited this temple cause it is close to Kyoto station and we had some spare time on the last day. Very big and impressive temple! Inside, it was quiet and peaceful. You can totally understand what they were trying to achieve. No entrance fees....More

This temple is actually only a few minutes walk from Kyoto's main JR station, yet it's shocking to think so many people visiting Kyoto don't even know it's there because they get straight off the train and onto the metro toward Kawaramachi. This temple is...More
