Neighbourhood: Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.

We really wanted to do this class while we were in Kyoto, so I reached out to them about 3 weeks before the trip to try to book a class as their website requires, but never got any response, and further efforts to contact them failed. They are on the outside edge of Kyoto, so didn't feel like wandering over on the off chance they could accommodate us. It's a shame. I will try again, but disappointing they require advance reservation and then ignore messages.

My boyfriend and I visited today and made some beautiful trays. We were seated in the traditional workshop, and made our trays alongside the 4th generation family who run the shop, and have been making their artwork for over 100 years. Nick also showed us some of the beautiful pieces his grandfather had made which were exquisite, alongside all the beautiful newer pieces in the store! Nick was an incredible host, and very informative and accommodating, with excellent English. If you are in Kyoto, would highly recommend this class, it’s easy to book on the website and is only a 5 min walk from the bamboo forest and temples. Thank you again, Nick!

My daughter and I each made a tray. This was a unique and fun experience. They had several patterns you can choose from and the trays were already premarked with the patterns so you don't have to worry about free handing the designs. Our trays turned out great.

We had a wonderful time learning this beautiful Japanese craft of applying mother of pearl (Japanese Abalone shell) to lacquer. The teacher was very patient teaching us how to cut the shell into petal shapes. We chose flowers for our designs and watched it slowly develop with paintwork and gold application into an amazing piece of artwork to take home. I chose the tray and my daughter chose coasters. So happy with the result! Gorgeous jewellery done by the expert craftsman of three generations is also for sale there - exquisite!! You will love this workshop!!

Learn a traditional Japanese craft and use your artistic flare to customise your take home souvenir from Kyoto. We had a great time, it was more difficult than I thought which I enjoyed because I had to concentrate and it took a couple of practice tries to cut out the shell.
If you are worried about dexterity they have another class that you can do with the shell pieces already cut out for you.
Really good value for money! I now have two coasters that I am excited to use. I also got a pair of earrings from the store that the masters had made, the quality of their jewellery artwork is incredible.

Sagaraden Nomura is just a short walk from Tenryuji Temple and other major Arashiyama sights. It is the perfect way to spend a few hours away from busy streets and tourists for a peaceful, uniquely Japanese experience.
Since it was just two of us, we signed up the previous night for the special course for a pair of coasters. Nick, the workshop instructor, was generous enough to accomodate us even on such short notice. Throughout the class, Nick was considerate and patient and demonstrated clearly with his actions and fluent English. Each step was slightly challenging at first, but with patience, concentration, and a bit of practice, every step was very doable and rewarding. Cutting the abalone shell was my favorite part because you could see the beautiful rainbow designs and choose the best parts of the shell piece to use. I definitely recommend upgrading to the special course to get the chance to do this step. The class allows you to really appreciate the craftsmanship, hard work, and patient detail that go into the art. As you watch masters at work next to you, you feel at peace and, briefly, a part of a craftsman community. Nick offered to take photos while we worked, giving us memories to take home in addition to our coasters.
When we asked, Nick welcomed us to spend time admiring the jewelry and other products on display in the shop, and he took the time to explain how the pieces were made. We ended up finding a pair of matching silver rings with beautiful abalone shell designs to take home. We can’t wait for our friends to ask about the rings so that we can tell the story of our truly unique and memorable experience in Kyoto!

This is something I’ve never seen offered elsewhere so I was excited to try it. We loved learning how to do this art and he was very patient and encouraging as we got the hang of it. The studio is very relaxing and comfortable. This was the perfect activity to escape the very hot afternoon and break the routine of sightseeing. It is also a great value as you get to learn and have a souvenir. If you are creative I encourage you to think of a design beforehand to make it even more unique or you can just give one of the templates your own twist as well. A great activity to do in Kyoto!

SagaradenNomura was a great complementary activity to sightseeing and visiting temples. On top of that I came out with a fabulous souvenir of my trip to Kyoto. Nick was quite kind and made the process easier by providing many prescribed designs we could follow. Furthermore, he is fluent in English. Directions to the studio are actually quite simple, there is a bus that goes directly from downtown Kyoto and takes @30-45 minutes.

We had a great time creating our own raden artwork! Our hosts were wonderful, they gave us a great explanation of everything, and we're very patient. This was a great and fun way to learn a bit about Japanese culture and create a beatiful souvenir!
