Khamovniki could be considered a city of its own – here it’s possible to find some of Moscow’s most important cultural institutions such as the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, the Novodevichy Convent and Trubetskikh Estate, great sport locations such as Luzhniki stadium and aqua complex, and long and beautiful Luzhniki embankment. Pick your preferred form of transport to explore the area – bicycle or river cruise during the summer and taxi in winter as many of the great places are situated beyond a short walk.

A wonderful ancient church with a carved iconostasis and fresh flowers. Must visited! Really great place!
Be sure to try the pies in the church shop opposite the entrance.

My hotel is abut a mile away but Spar is the largest supermarket in the area so every two days I walk past this church and sometimes go inside.

What I like the most is to see people getting out their way come inside pray and keep on with their business after leaving. One evening there was a prayer and the women’s choir and the added superb acoustics of the temple make you feel in heaven.

If this church is in your way do stop and visit it In my opinion it is as magnificent in the outside as in the interior.

To my taste, one of the most beautiful Moscow temples. A rare example of how the aesthetic impression is created not by the use of standard architectural elements - in this regard, the church is not unique - but by the special emphasis in decorative details, with tastefully selected and decorated colorings, tiles. And the sense of proportion is observed - the temple is not overloaded in its decoration, on the contrary, indicates the delicate taste and skill of its creators. It is particularly surprising that the colorfulness of the temple is created by a combination of only red and green colors on a white background.
The main, perhaps, its drawback is the surroundings. The temple is located on a noisy Komsomolskiy Avenue in a rather sullen development, not harmonious with it. And there's nothing we can do about it.

St. Nicholas church in Khamovniki is one of my favourites, I often pass it on the way to my dental clinic, they are right around the corner.
You will like it, too – it’s close to metro and cafés , on the way to Leo Tolstoy museum and the much-loved by foreign guests Gorky park is on the other side of the Moscow river.
Although you may find this church very typically Russian, with golden domes, curlicues and numerous crosses piercing the sky, it actually is unique. Russian churches are usually solemn, sometimes congested and always suppressing any merry mood if you got one on entering it. This one, on the contrary, looks very cheerful thanks to its green-and-red tiles.
The church was built during the short reign of tsar Feodor Alexeevich, Peter the Great’s half-brother – he died being just 20 years old. This was the time of economic boost and high hopes; the construction works were wholly funded by the nearby weavers’ community – ‘Khamovniki’ means the place where weavers live.
It is not recommended to take pictures inside, if you do not want to get screamed at, therefore I’ll only supply the façade photos as soon as I process them.

This is a lovely small church not far from Tolstoy's house. A very old church but lovely with a fine set of gold domes.

Here in the Khamovniki District, in the street named after the great russian and world writer, Lev (Leo) Tolstoy, the man so opposed to the russian church and religion, we found this pearl of russian architecture, representing the Church of Sainte Nicholas, the Wonderworker.
No wonder, it is named to honor Saint Nicholas, the Wonderworker, since the buildings of the church, the bell tower, the refectory, themselves, show all possible marvels, miracles in the design, style, decoration and whatever else.
It was built in the second half of 17th century and in fact is the parish church of the sometimes existed association of the weavers ( so called " sloboda" in the Khamovniki District of Moscow).
The main building is the five-domed church and beside it, there are also the bell tower and refectory. The domes are onion shaped as we saw in the case of so many other russian churches, the bell tower is tented, that is, literally enveloped in some kind of the wrap, consisted of the very beautiful tiles and in the same time is one of the highest tent-style bell towers in Moscow region.
As a matter of fact, the church is of late Muscovite Baroque style and we can perceive at its crown, the number of small circular kokoshnik - type gables.
One of my favorite churches, that I had seen in Moscow.

After the review of this church on TripAdvisor and in Fodor's, I was determined to find and photograph it. Unfortunately, I arrived early in the morning, as it was opening and calling for morning service. I asked if I could photograph around the church from inside the churchyard walls ( not inside the church). Perhaps I wasn't understood -entirely possible- or possibly it was because the members of the church were being called for service, but the person opening the gate that morning was quite clear that I would not be allowed to photograph the church from the grounds. I understand and respect their concerns (photography of members would not be appropriate and they didn't know me) but I would have liked to photograph the church as it beautiful from afar. So for me this outing was a disappointment, but may not be for others, depending on the reason for the visit or the timing.

We wanted to see as many as possible of Moscow’s lovely and unique churches.

This was another treasure, the wonderfully ornate St Nicholas of the Weavers. We got our first views of the green and golden spires and domes over the lush trees, which were fabulous.

The green and maroon decoration is so attractive. Its quiet location relatively away from the busy Moscow streets and traffic adds to the tranquillity.

We visited early Sunday morning so it was still open after the religious service. The interior is equally beautiful and wonderfully preserved.
