Not quite what I expected, but it is a good trip
Apr 2020
I had read all about the floating islands and was looking forward to this as a real exciting and interesting adventure. It is somewhat interesting (how they are built and maintained is enlightening), but not quite as spectacular as the surrounding area--it is beautiful!

The boat ride out to the islands is very nice--great vistas and lots to see as you approach the islands. Seeing the boats dragging the reeds to build the islands is great, but I was upset to see them using an outboard motor to do the work....

The natives put on a good show as they demonstrate and describe the trial and tribulations of living on the islands. Their native costumes (which you will be required to wear) is quite a colorful sight. They are happy people living a tough life.

I could do without the "traditional: selling of the trinkets that they supposedly make, but it is what it is... The ride on the big reed boats is kinda fun.

I enjoyed going out the real islands much more. However, you really do have to see the floating islands!

Guests of Uros family - unforgettable
Feb 2018 • Couples
This is an amazing place and not to be missed. It is a very different experience compared to other tours as we were guests of a local Uros family. We were shown their way of life, went out fishing on a totura boat, ate local dishes and learned a lot about their history, threats and plans for the future. A spanish speaker helps here.
Thank you Luis, Rubem and Sylvia for your hospitality. We will never forget this.

Andree and Gemma, visited Uros at February 16, 2018.

Could've been a great experience but should've set a right expectation.

We stayed one night. Overall, it's a great tour to experience traditional Uros life closely with the real Uros people. But, they should've set the expectation right. We received an email with action packed plans and we were excited, but that was our mistake. We were supposed to be picked up at 10am but Frank showed up around 10:20am (unfortunately, being late seems to be an epidemic problem in Puno. I highly recommend to stay at Bolivia side of Lake Titikaka rather than Puno). He wasn't receiving any call and responding any texts. He didn't even say sorry. Then, we couldn't see the main guide Luis until 7pm that day. We were just staying at small island. It was a good time to catch up my readings but clearly this is not good tourism practice. Around 7pm Luis showed and again he didn't say sorry. I was expecting an English speaking guide, but he barely speaks English. He speaks some, but most of them seem to be what he momorizes. He couldn't understand even very basic English sentences. Don't get me wrong, he and his wife are very nice people. This trip itself is very good. I'm mostly complaining about setting a right expectation. If a guide's English is not good then it should be better to say so honestly on the website.

I spent two nights at the lodge and I have to say that it was ok. I don't agree with rachelwalker12 with her review because in my case I have slept well with all those blankets, and people there were just friendly and doing their best. besides was awesome and staying at the Islands it is a unique experience. If you cancel a service at last minute you have to be aware of the consequences wherever you are in the world.

I recommend staying at the lodge but just consider that things will be simple.

Horrendous & money sponging.

My stay was disastrous. The transfer met me at the bus station, then took me in a taxi to the lake where he had parked his boat. I had to wait 30 minutes as he wanted to give his sister a lift in the boat too. So awkward. The island is 10 minutes or so from puno, but when we got there he showed me my room and left me alone, on this reed island, by myself, with nothing. I had just arrived by bus, hadn't eaten all day, I had no food, no water. There was no electricity or shower, I just read my book in this wooden shack. It was extremely cold, and the beds are lined with so many matts in an attempt to keep warm, that I felt pinned down. I couldn't move.

I hardly slept due to the cold and discomfort. I was meant to be staying 2 nights, but The next morning I asked to be taken back to puno. I had to pay AGAIN for the "transfer", and $60 or so for the room. I felt as though these people imagined they could make a guest house and jump on the tourist bandwagon, but in reality have no clue what they're doing.

To make this EVEN worse, 2 weeks later I am contacted by hostel bookers informing me that because I didn't stay the second night I must pay anyway. The money was taken out of my account; I explained that I should be refunded the money I did pay, not charged even more! But Uros tupirmarka persuaded them otherwise saying it is their policy and they had other bookings which they had to cancel. This is a LIE as the island was empty, and the man who picked me up told me I was the only booking and march is a quiet month. Just please, avoid this horrendous place at all costs. Sponging of hard working tourists.

Nice but too "touristic"

A nice boat tour and very interesting. The whole "set-up" feels however as a "living-museum" and it's just a little bit too much.

Interesting, but not great
In short: skip and stay in a hostel in Puno or do it just for the experience.

I stayed on the island as part of a tour. I was told by the agent that for 50 soles I could visit the floating islands, stay the night, and go to Taquile the next day. He didn't bother to say that you have to pay an extra 20 soles for lodging. If you want dinner, you pay 20 more, and breakfast is provided for 10. I was very disappointed and felt deceived. I would only recommend this for people if they bring their own food. Otherwise, they leave you on the island at around 6 pm with very little to do. The lodging provided is a hut with 3 uncomfortable beds. We had a tough time getting much sleep on them.

A rip off
Oct 2014 • Family
Tourist are just money bags and we are treated so. You feel forced to buy something or take a rid on their boat and NOTHING is for free even if you already paid for the tour.
