Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Petagas Memorial Garden was built in 1946 at its present site to commemorate the massacre of 176 Kinabalu Guerrillas led by Albert Kwok who resisted the Japanese Occupation on the 21st of January 1944. The memorial is well maintained but not made a tourist attraction. At the time of my visit, there was no other visitor although the gate was opened. It is surrounded by village houses and very close to the Kota Kinabalu International Airport( Terminal 1) it should be promoted especially to local people so as to know the important event of the past particularly on the evils of wars.

The country was the site of one of the more horrific aspects of WW2 and the treatment of Prisoners by Japanese and Formosan Guards. My visit encouraged me to find more about this episode.
A pity that man has to treat his fellow so cruelly.
Despite this issue. It was worth the effort to visit the memorial and find out about the episode.

there is nothing special to see (out look of this attraction ),but the truth story of world war 2 was a good education ( especially the video of the sandakan death march was so horrific, emotional ) for our young children, teens and japanese (at japan, they can't get the truth of WW2 )

Best part of trip, to see the video on the sandakau death march was so emotional and to travel to where the march ended was so moving.

Alas I visited on a public holiday.....closed😞. The garden is a simple layout, main walkway to an information memorial. From the main town it is a quick drive in a taxi. Worth a visit if you have the time.

this memorial is poorly maintained. You could got to any rural Australian city and see a better one (it's essentially just a cenotaph). The creepy old man living In the shak with his cat didn't add value to the memorial at all.

We have driven past this memorial a few times and having visited other war memorials we decided it was long over due to visit Petagas memorial and pay our respects to the fallen.
One reason we did not visit before is that it is just a short taxi ride from Tanjung Aru or K.K. town. It is positioned so you are unable to walk to it.It is next to the busy main road out of K.K. towards the airport and next to the railway line.
We paid a taxi from our hotel at Tanjung Aru £16 / MR80 . MR30 each way and MR20 to wait for us.
We were not concerned with the cost as we planned too visit the memorial on this trip before we left the UK.
We brought out some remembrance crosses and placed them in the bleak grass area in front of the memorial and others under the brass plaques on the memorial. There are no "named" graves here only a central plaque in remembrance to the fallen service personnel and the Malay people who also suffered throughout the occupation.
It is small. We allowed 30minutes for our visit but to be honest we had covered all the points we needed to after 20minutes.

It is a very scenic location with nice walks and refreshing swims after. It is however extremely touristy. Massive crowds of people even in the off season.

This memorial is very close to the airport and not far out of the city.
It is not well known and does not seem to be often visited. Very few locals I have talked about it with were even aware of it.
The plaques explain in different languages the tragic events which unfolded here and nearby. I was fortunate to have read the book Kinabalu Guerillas , so am aware of the story around this place. I recommend a visit to people of any nationality.

'The deeds of the locals during WW2 against the Japanese have been let down by this rather pathetic attempt as a remembrance place. We expected something a lot better.
