One of the must visit scenic beauty outside of Hachinohe
4.0 of 5 bubblesAug 2019
During my journey to Tohoku Region summer of 2019, I chose Hachinohe as my base of two-days layover and sightseeing before traveling onward to Oirase Gorge. Tanesashi Seaside Park is one of the Pacific Coast's Sanriku Fukko(reconstruction) national parks, that are recovered from 2011's Tsunami destruction. It is also designated as one of the national's scenic beauties. The grassy seaside beach park opens to the scenic views of Pacific Ocean and rugged sea rocks dotted here and there. Tanesashi Coast is also well known for the grassy wetland and nature habitats with variety of wildflowers and coastal plants growing from Spring to Fall. Along Tanesashi Coast there are a few recommended visiting sites. Kabushima, a small island off the coast, is the breeding ground for black-tailed seagull Umineko population, that is unique to other regular seagulls. Kabushima Shrine is sitting on top of the hill. Osuka Coast and Shirahama Beach where sand sings with squeals when walking on it. The top attraction is the Tanesashi Kaigan (Seaside) Park which covers a large area of grassy meadows and breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Within the vicinity of Kaigan there are tourist information center, restaurant, souvenir shops and a few lodging facilities. JR East local train Hachinohe Line runs between Hachinohe and Kuji, makes stop at Same Station, Matsu-Shirahama Station (access to Shirahama Beach), and Tanesashi Kaigan Station. During Spring, Summer and early Fall season local 100 yen sightseeing buses operate daily (winter season only run on the weekend and holidays) between Same Station and Tanesashi Kaigan Station, making stops at several costal major attractions. For the nature’s lovers there are several hiking trails that lead to the coastal coves, look out points, Samekado Lighthouse, pine forests, nature habitats area and fishing ports. If weather is nice a day trip visit along the coast is worthy of your time. During hot summer season, wear sun blocking gears are recommended.

From Same, I took the 100 yen Tanesashi Coast sightseeing bus "Uminekogo" to Tanesashi Coast. I was able to enjoy the spectacular view on the way. It was a beautiful coastline. It is said to be about 12 kilometers long. And Tanesashi Natural Lawn Area near the end of the bus is a green carpet that spreads to the shore, and is said to be a scenic spot that represents Tanesashi Coast. Beyond the natural lawn area are steep reefs and the open sea, and it was a very refreshing and pleasant walk. After that, I walked to JR Tanesashi Coast Station. It took about 5 minutes. On the way back, I wondered whether to take the JR or the bus, but I got back on the bus and got off to see Kabushima Shrine. The fare for the sightseeing bus "Uminekogo" is cheap and you can use a transportation IC card, so if you plan in advance, you can make the most of it.

He visited by railway. It takes less than five minutes to reach the green area of the grass by walking along a straight road from Tanesashi Kaigan Station to the sea side. From there, there are views of grassland and the sea. Take a walk around the area, enjoying a view of the greenery of the grasslands and the blue of the sea in harmony. On the way back, he took the train from Tanesashi-Kaigan Station. This Tanesashi-Kaigan Station is unstaffed, but has a clean station building and toilets.

The Tanesashi Coastal Route is a gem. In a 10-km stretch, very walkable, you will find huge boulders, sand beaches, natural lawns, tranquil pine forests. The beauty is otherworldly and the variation in such a short distance are really unusual. Get to Same on the train and start there. If you want to walk the length, you can catch a bus or the train back. If you want to walk a specific stretch, take the scenic bus and get off at one end, picking up the return bus or the train at the other end of your walk.

I've been here at the end of August. It already turned cold but the beach still kept green.
The beach is very beautiful and unique.
It's very easy to get here both by train and by bus, especially by bus.

Tanesashi beach is long and sandy and usually very quiet. There's not anything in the way of shops so take supplies with you! The waves can also be very strong so take care when swimming.

The main traffic arteries of Hachinohe feel crowded with pachinko parlors, retail outlets, and everyday restaurants. But the Tanesashi Coast is a surprising and sublime Pacific vista located just minutes' away from all of that detritus. Its unspoiled beaches and rugged landscapes are a beautiful sight and are well worth seeking out. For those with time to explore Hachinohe, the Tanesashi Coast deserves your attention.
