We went on a rainy day, and found it to be relatively interesting to learn about the history of the lantern festival in Akita. I'd only recommend it for rainy days though and I wouldn't make a special trip there.

My husband and I finally found the museum and went in. We had come from the Red Brick Museum and had taken the scenic route, so to speak. I wasn't expecting much, but was surprised at how much I enjoyed myself here. There isn't a...More

Since our visit didn't coincide with a festival, this was a good way to see and experience the Kanto lanterns. In addition to many displays, performers gave demonstrations of the different types of balancing done with the long bamboo polls holding up multiple rows of...More

It is not a very large museum but it is run by the local canto society which is a kind of festival where young men carry huge numbers of lanterns. It's quite a big deal there and they have societies to do this in various...More

I was indeed surprised by the displays inside this place. There were quite some Kantos of different sizes for visitors to try out with! Additionally there are some exhibits about some overseas Kanto performances during some cultural exchange events. This is definitely a good place...More

Just a short walk away from the city centre, the staff here were rather welcoming. I enjoyed looking at the towering Kanto lanterns displayed here as well as the videos showing the past festivals.

This is dedicated to the Kanto Festival held in the late summer. I visited a week after the festival ended and unfortunately did not get to see the energy and excitement that the festival is known for. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I...More

This is a place where the lanterns from Kanto festival are stored and on display. It also tells the story and culture of Akita. For ¥100, it's a kust when you in Akita. But, be aware, it's close at 4.30pm like all other places in...More

We enjoyed this museum. It's good value at Y100 includes Akita festival exhibition and old house. If you ask one of the people you will be able to try carrying the lanterns. The videos also kept our younger one interested.
