I definitely understand the hype about this shrine - It was beautiful! we went on a day where it was snowing heavily and it made the experience even more magical for us. Easily my favourite thing I managed to do in Kyoto.

I would return to this place but would do two things differently: I would be prepared to sweat/ work out, and I would cover every inch of skin I had! The walk through the shrine, while beautiful, is certainly a hike. Be prepared (who doesn't...More

A definite must-visit for any tourist. Been here a couple times and yes in both instances, the place is packed with visitors. Although in my opinion, it was not a major hindrance in getting around the area. Tried climbing the mountain with beautifully lined up...More

This shrine is amazing. Just one stop on the train from Kyoto station (or an easy bike ride) - it's free and simply breathtaking. Wander up the hill through the never ending red temple arches.
