Wakkanai City (if you use the term loosely) is Japan's northern-most city. It was founded in 1879. The 100th Year Memorial Tower was built to commemorate the centenary. It's bleak place. The Northern Territories, a group of four small islands claimed by Japan but occupied...More

We took a long walk from town to this tower which is absolutely worth it on a clear day for the views. The tower itself has a small exhibition that we didn't really spent much time at; the highlight is obviously the view from above....More

My son and I visited the tower and museum in the late afternoon. We walked from the main bus station to the Hokumon Shrine, then took the foot path to the Eastern section of Wakkanai Park which has most of the monuments and a gift...More

It was blustery icy wind at 45 km/hr but we took the courage to drive up the hill after visiting Soya Misaki. Worth a short visit to snap some photos even though it was icy cold with frozen hands.

We just dropped by this area after visiting the Northernmost landmark. Lots of parking spaces, hard to even drive up to this area because of the steep slope. We didn't get outside of the vehicle as it was extremely windy that day.

Hiking up to the base of the tower was a bit of challenge when the temperature could be sub zero 3 degree C. Partially no thanks to the global warning effect, Wakkanai snow season was delay for more than a month. With full sun ray...More

A lot of pictures and videos about Wakkanai and Saharin, parking spaces available which is good for driving tours around Wakkanai. Not to be missed if you are interested in knowing about Russia and Japan history of the vicinity.

A rusty tower commemorating the 100th anniversary of the founding of Wakkanai. It has a small historical museum and, of course, a souvenir shop. Don't go up the tower elevator unless the sky is clear. Rain looks the same at 200 feet up as it...More
