Letoon is located 4 km from Xanthos. It was the religious center of Lycia. There are temples dedicated to Leto, Apollo and Artemisia in Letoon. Xanthosians were people that were committed to their freedom with passion. Historian Herodotus has cited these characteristics in his work. Even though the Xanthosians had won important victories against the Persians, they set fire to the city when they understood that they would be defeated, with the women, children and treasures in it. Meanwhile the men attacked the Persian soldiers swearing an oath of death, and nobody survived. Thats why not a single Xanthosian was captured by the Persians. The event is cited thus in a local epigraph:
In the name of our honor,
And our freedom,
we, the people of this land,
Have sought mass suicide.
We left a fire behind us.
Never to die out....

Over in Kalkan for two weeks and, as with last year, we did a bit of a two day road trip along the Lycian way and explored a host of sites

Xanthos, Tlos, Pinara, Letoon, Patara, Phellos, Myra etc

Letoon is tucked away in an agricultural area not far from Pinara and Patara

It’s quite hard to find so have google maps on your phone handy

It’s a UNESCO site so there’s a small
Charge - like 2 quid each

I wish it had been more as clearly there’s not much funding going off

The site is amazing but very tired with lots of weeds growing through a lot of the archeological works

Kind of made me a bit sad that there is all this history and it’s almost disappearing again

Please go and support them

Probably one of the most important cities in Lycia next to Xanthos. Make sure you take your swim suit along as the beach, one of the better ones in Turkey is not far.

According to myth Leto fled Mount Olympus after a domestic dispute with Hera, Zeus' jealous wife in order to protect her kids Appollo and Artemis. She did a good job as the site boasts 3 temples erected in her honour. Local shepherd's tried to evict her but thanks to the protection of local wolves she retained possession of the property and had a bit of fun transforming the shepherds into frogs...as one does after a failed eviction attempt. There's a family-sized amphitheatre and the site is prone to flooding (to amuse the frogs?) so many foundations and mosaics are submerged. If you're going to Xanthos, Letoon is a 15 minute drive.

Visited here yesterday afternoon, it is a bit out of the way, not the eadiest place to get here. There is a decent sized theatre, half a temple, lots of rubble. Lotd of turtles in the ponds and some lizards. At ten lira its not bad, worth half an hour or so

I went on a family trip with my husband and our two children aged 6 years and my baby 4 months. First of all we booked the “bungalow” thinking it would be nice to be a little separate from other rooms so people don’t get woken up if my son decides to cry in the middle of the night. Turns out the “bungalow” is literally just a small flat with around 12 small rooms in it. Most of them had families in there. The family next to us had an infant too who cried a lot at night and u could hear it as if they are in the same room as us. Now because the resort is quiet big we brought our push chair with us and our room was on the 1st floor so we had to take the push chair up and down the stairs a few times a day it sure was not fun). The mattress was really hard that my hips started aching. Anyway on day 4 of our 9 day trip we got to get a room in the hotel itself. It was nice and big, perfect for the 4 of us! Turns out the cleaners don’t clean the room properly! They didn’t clean the toiled and when asked for a change of sheets there were for some reason stains on one of them. Even after leaving them a tip the room didn’t get cleaned properly.

The food was pretty good. And the best part was the beach near by. The pools were freezing cold so my daughter didn’t really enjoy the pool.

The beach bar staff or generally the service staff ignores you as much as they can. No smile, not friendly or polite. It’s like they were pretty fed up of tourists already. If the service staff would have been friendly it would have made a big difference to our trip. We were pretty glad to be back home.

Overall a nice experience (only cuz it was sunny and we spent most of the time at the beach) but definitely won’t visit again.

Letoon is hard to find as it's not well signposted from Xanthos, if you don't know the area, however, I think it's worth the effort.
We have s een quite a few amphitheaters in our travels, this is smaller than most, but it has two doorways, one leading to a necropolis and the other opens to a large structure with some sections submerged in shallow water.
Entry only TL 8.00 .

We were brought here by one of our Turkish friends Apo in his car.We were on our own walking about the ancient city. There is a small entry fee to pay but well worth it.We slowly walked around trying to make sense of the layout of the city. The place was named after Leto and was one of the Lycian cities .There are Terrapins in the water if you look you will see them.

The small site is really pretty and unusual with having Apollo's temple and the portico's. But also watch out for turtles in the water, and listen to the frogs! Quite a lot to see in a small site, but much is blocks laid out.

Worth going in conjunction with Xanthos (which is more interesting) which is 10 minutes drive away. Letoon is the least interesting ruins we've been to in Turkey so far.
