Definitely see the sites first (Kaunos, Tlos, Letoon, Xanthos), and then you can really appreciate what you’re looking at in the museum. It’s like a treasure hunt. You’re wondering where everything is while you’re visiting the sites, and BAM, there all in this little museum (except for what the Brits took home). We especially liked the trilingual stele and the Artemis/Apollo symbol mosaic out of Letoon.

Well worth a visit, this is where a lot of the stuff from local historic sites has ended up. Went to Kaunas a while ago which is fascinating and here you will see some of the treasures from there, and other ancient sites. Costs nothing to get in and half an hour here is time well spent

The Fethiye Museum is a delightful museum, located off the main street in the center of town next to a school. It has many Lycian artifacts, some of which were found during the excavations of Fethiye (ancient Telmessos).

Exhibits include Lycian pieces from the Bronze, Archaic, Hellenistic and Roman ages and from Byzantine times. There are coins from various periods, pre-historical and historical ornaments, statues, busts etc. Also pieces of a tomb from Tlos, grave steles, offering altars, jewelry, bronze pieces, amphorae, column pedestals and capitals and earthenware vases. One very significant find displayed here is the very important 'Trilingual Stele' from Letoon, bearing inscriptions in Greek, Lycian and Aramaic, which is crucial in the deciphering of the Lycian language. There is also a separate ethnographic section with pieces from the Menteşe and Ottoman times.

This is hard to find. It is a white building, down a side street a couple of hundred metres from the main mosque, next to a football ground. This was the third time I had tried to find it and I found the easiest way was to just get a taxi!
Turkey has so much history it is mind boggling. Fethiye is built on layers of ancient civiliations - Lycian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman. The government tends to leave most sites unexcavated. When I visited Tlos, where there is a massive Roman town high in the mountains, I was told that certain recently discovered statues from the Roman theatre were in this museum.
The museum has two galleries with items from all eras. One of their problems is that they don't know where a lot of them came from! Displays of ancient gold and silver coins were enough to make a coin collector's eyes pop out. Household items and small figurines were housed in display cases. There must be lots more under your feet as you walk around the town.
A cool, interesting place to visit with a low entrance fee of about £1.00. There are also lots of ancient statues and items around the outside of the building.
Excellent.

On a drizzly day we went to this small museum. Bit difficult to find but was a free entrance! We were pleasantly pleased with the artifacts, the exhibits, the information and of course the life size romans, turks and greeks! Well worth a visit!

The Museum is on Sokak 505 across the road from the dolmus station. The exhibits are all on one floor and contain finds from Tlos, Telmessos and Kaunos dating from about 3BC to the late Byzantine period. Everything is well displayed and all the notices are translated into English.
The exhibits include Lycian pottery, jewellery, votive stones, coins, glass, ceramic, metal and stone artifacts. Some items are tiny but photographic enlargements of the details are highlighted within the display cases. The trilingual stele which helped decipher the Lycian language and promissary steles are also on view. It is possible to touch statuary from over 2000 years ago and to appreciate at close range the workmanship involved.
Check before taking any photographs (particularly flash ones) inside.
The outside area displays sarcophagi, statues and stonework form the same periods.
The Museum was well worth the 5 lira entrance fee and I was fascinated with the coins and particularly noted the detail on the pottery which can be seen reproduced on items currently on sale in Turkish shops.

Surprisingly good museum covering the Lycian kingdom. On 505 Sokak on the main dolmus route close to the final bus station. Get off at the school bus stop. Free entry. Particularly interesting if you have already visited any of historic sites of Tlos, Letoon, Xanthos or Patara. Some exhibits better those seen at the Ephesus museum and no crowds.Spent a good hour here before visiting the old town.

Whilst staying at Calis beach we took the water taxi (£5return for two people) over to the Fethiye waterfront. The waterfront is lovely in itself with lovely bars and restaurants. The museum is a little hard to find but you get to it from the main road back from the waterfront and follow the yellow sign. (This is one of the few words in Turkish that give you a clue as to what it is in English) A small museum but the items displayed are incredible. Ancient history with inscriptions and artifacts going back to BC. The museum is well air conditioned, the toilets are spotless. I would have liked to be able to buy a book or something about what I was seeing. I did see a leaflet though that explained how Liverpool university and a British government grant was helping to excavate and preserve these ancient sites and exhibits, which I was pleased to see. Lovely to tie up the items displayed with the historical sites in the area. Very, very interesting. Free to go in.
