Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Really interesting to watch them put on their make up. Superb acting/dancing. Stayed for martial arts and dancing - so glad I did.

First we watched the actors apply their own makeup, in small mirrors, freeform (no pictures for guidance). I could never do this, especially so beautifully. Then one actor demonstrated how they use their eyes and facial muscles to communicate emotions and information to each other, without speaking. They train for years to do this. (My favorite part of the evening.)
Last was the actual story performance, accompanied by percussion and voice (narrator). Personally, I found the chanting a bit grating after a while, but I enjoyed watching the actors' skill and seeing examples of what had been shown in the demonstration.

This show was a bit outside the realm of what my husband and I would usually take the time to see, but I could especially appreciate the art of it after seeing the preparation that goes into it. We arrived early to watch the actors apply their makeup but probably could have done without a full half hour of that. The overall experience felt a bit lengthy and hard to follow at times, but it was the costumes and facial expressions that really made it for me. The sad part was that the theatre was packed and although the audience was made up solely of well dressed tourists, not one person left a donation as we left the theatre aside from my husband and I. This was after they explained all that goes into the production of the show and how they rely on donations to keep it running. I felt like a lot of people didn’t appreciate it, but that’s just my personal opinion. I would love to see this particular show do well and remain open, as the actors clearly put a lot of work into it.

The actors and musicians are very talented and the eye movements are amazing but the show was a bit too long and I noticed quite a few of the audience nodding off in the heat
Should also add that the toilets were awful with no water to wash your hands

Kathakali is such an interesting show, full of amazing expression, dance, some crazy expression and some telling screams!!!

We definitely recommend going early for the make up demonstration / preparation. It was really beautiful and amazing to see the transformation.

At the end the martial art demonstration was really unique and fun. The young men were really talented.

This is the arranged tourist show so to expect something natural and tribal is unrealistic. As an introduction to this region and its traditions this should meet your expectations.

We saw the show with only about 10 others so it was quite intimate and allowed us to take great pictures.

Arrogant staff! The place lacks credibility and authenticity. Just one of those places to loot foreign tourists.
It's such a shame in the heart of Fort Cochin. If you want to get harassed and stared at, try here.

Kathakali theatre is a fascinating form of theatre, and it dates back hundreds of years. It was being performed at the same time Shakespeare was penning his plays in London. One arrives early and can watch one or more performers applying the complicated make up. This is a very elaborate and painstaking process. The performance then begins. Incrediblly minute and exact hand, foot, and eye movements. It is very remniscent of Balinese dance. This art form is captivating, enthralling. My only suggestion: bring a cushion. This is not Loews Cinema24, so the chairs are not comfortable. For those who want that, go to a movie. The theatre staff is also super pleasant and helpful and called our driver for us after the performance.

Kathakali, an ethnic dance form of Kerala, is done with a heavy make-up. They allow you to see the artist taking the make-up for the dance, and then the dance itself, with explanations for the outsiders too!

Recorded audio quality was terrible. Theatre seating arrangement its a room with Chairs not a theatre. Performance was not worth the show price.
