Constantine P. Cavafy is most probably my favorite poet so you can imagine my excitement when visiting his former home where he lived for the last 25 years of his life.

I was pretty much awe struck, knowing that this was the street he often walked along, standing at the window’s he often stood at, looking out into his beloved Alexandria. Most of his furniture - seen in the old photo’s of the apartment - have gone although there still are alot of beautiful pieces, along with many writings and photos. Unfortunately they do not sell any books.

The museum didn’t have much in English so I recommend using a translation app to scan the text into the language that you need. On the day I visited it was free although gave a donation. If you are trying to tap into a former vision of Alexandria, a former century, nostalgia, then you will find it here.

A small and cute museum, ex house of the big poet. For people who love Cavafy, it is a very nice place with a great collection of his works. It is not very easy to find it as there are no signs but if you are lucky you will meet a very kind local man (sells cute souvenirs) who will show you the staircase to the museum.

As Greeks, we were truly enthusiastic that the man in the museum speaks Greek!

The museum includes some rooms of Cavafys house and some staff and books of the great poet. It is located in a narrow road at the centre of Alexandria! It is small but deserves a visit to see the place where the poet spent his last 25 years! As a Greek I enjoyed so much my visit to this place and I still remember the Egyptian responsible for the tickets who spoke greek and when we went he put a Cd with Elli Lampeti ( a famous Greek actress) intoning Cavafy poems!

The house where the great Greek poet lived! In the rooms of the house there are all the objects and books of Cavafy! His office, his bed, his collections! A visit to the museum is worth it, especially if you are Greek or you admire the work of the poet!

Cavafy museum is hosted on the second floor of an old turn of the century house in a small side street.
There is where the Great poet lived and created. At his time Alexandria was a multinational city where Greek, Jews, Armenians and others lived and prospered. Arabic element was a minority. This district was filled with night entertainment to a man's darkest desires.
There is where he inspired and lived. The apartment is filled with pictures of his younger and latter years, his handwritten will and birth certificate in Greek, many scripts and books. Some publications are also sold for providing an income for the preservation of the place.
The furniture is not antiques but true replicas of the original, with the exception of a couple of pieces.
It is worth a visit as from this place stems part of the world literature that belong to all people.

Cavafy is regarded by many as the single most important poet of modern Greece. So, a visit to his house, despite the chaotic traffic of Alexandria, is a necessary tribute to his poetic genious by his admirers. Well taken care of, small, but an emotional experience for the more poetic souls.

" I will go to another city better than this one " Cavafy museum, cavafy museum just two steps from Madam Christina cafe or Elite Cafe in Safia Zaghloul Street. As l read a bit about that great poet l knew that he born in April 1863 and died in April 1933 and he laying in the Greek Community Cemetery in Alexandria. Cavafy grow up in very rich family, cavafy used to have one brother and one sister but that brother and sister died so cavafy became the only boy that the mother had, on that time his mother took very care of him so much, as she used to bring the teacher at home for cavafy and after cavafy sister died the mother became so sad for the death of her daughter so she used to dress cavafy as girls as well as cavafy stayed most of his life with his mom in Alexandria, we all knew that in Greece and Italy long time ago and in some other European countries lots of wars happened so people escaped from there countries, and as first port for them at the Mediterranean was Alexandria so they found a peace in Alexandria so they lived in it and they built there own clubs, churchs and cemeteries as well. So cavafy family done the same they escaped from crete in Greece and they came to Alexandria, cavafy also used to travel between Hong Kong and Istanbul but he found himself more in Alexandria as he used to work a small work in irrigation authority in Alexandria plus when he became forty he started to write poets, one of his famous poet is
" The City " which l started my conversation with here as well l cry always when l read it l don't know why but if you notice you will see most Cavafy poets is sad poets may be cause the life he lived was full of sadness moments. If you visited Cavafy museum you will be back and you will feel the years which passed away from when you first enter from the door of the house building, really l think Cavafy was the greatest poet in that profound time. How could we be visiting Alexandria and not pay a visit to Cavafy’s house! It is way too interesting especially if you are Greek.

A place of pilgrimage even before its transformation into a museum, Cavafy's last home is considered a "must" for all visitors to Alexandria.

The Museum contains a wide range of bibliographical material, translations of Cavafy's poetry in 20 languages by 40 different scholars, and most of the 3,000 articles and works written about his poetry.

His flat is in Sharm el-Sheikh Street which is nowadays a tribute to his life and a major attraction for anyone on an Alexandrian literary pilgrimage.

The Greek Alexandrian poet found fame and recognition for his writing after his death. He spent his working life as a journalist and civil servant.

The Cavafy Museum is run under the auspices of the Cultural Section of the Greek Embassy in Cairo.

Open from Tuesday – Sunday from 10:00 – 15:00
Thursdays & Sundays from 10:00 – 17:00

I had been trying to find this place on several occasions in previous visits to Alexandria. It's in Raml area in Cavafy for flat. The Greek consulate and community in Alexandria started the project with Greek government financing it and foreign minister opening the museum. It's worth a visit
