- Jason SMelbourne, Australia2,406 contributionsNice Historical ChurchBlack Church is Romania's largest gothic church and has many relics that date back 600 years in it. Burnt down in the 1600's with only the outside walls surviving. having visited so many churches in Europe wouldn't say it's a must do, but i did enjoy the walk around, special note the alter is amazing to see!! However not a big fan of having to pay entrance fee to enter a place of worship too many places do it in Europe for revenue raising.Visited March 2023Travelled soloWritten 16 December 2023
- Jetset2121Lighthouse Point, Florida47 contributionsNot for seasoned travelers…If you have traveled and seen many churches and cathedrals or even just one or (a few) famous one(s), there is nothing here that will get you excited… The town center is worth a nice stroll and definitely a lunch or a dinner stop. But I wouldn’t center my trip around Brasov. Rather stay near a castle in the area, do a morning tour then move on to my next stop. Just my two cents, after decades of travel planning and leisure travel.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 April 2024
- liverpool1023London, United Kingdom1,250 contributionsThe must see sight in BraşovThis solid looking, robust church squats in the centre of Braşov dominating the northern part of the old town. During the reformation the church was absorbed into the evangelical church. It has many interesting feature including a display of gravestone depicting the interred burghers with highly sculptured detail. The church is adorned with Ottoman rugs from Anatolian - the result of trade during the 18th century with Ottoman Empire. There are also some impressive painted panels on the pews relating the various town guilds.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 May 2024
- Andy FDevizes, United Kingdom1,397 contributionsVery StrikingThis is a very large, very old and very impressive building. It looks in places as if it's been through the wars, and its history proves thsat it certainly has. Inside is impressive too - a very large and high space. There's little in the way of stained glass that you might see elsewhere in Europe, but the clean lines and arching columns/ roof are certainly impressive. Interesting set of decorative (Islamic) prayer mats all the way along one wall - not something you'd normally expect to see. Don't miss the painting in one side chapel known as the black Madonna.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 13 May 2024
- Reuben ARehovot, Israel634 contributionsIt shows the historical struggle between catholicism and protestantismIt is a monumental church on Brasov's main square. The romanesque catholic church was turned into a lutheran one and the frescoes, paintings and sculpures all removed. There is very little baroque ornamentation in the church just around the priest's raised pulpit. The main decoration along the walls consist of oriental carpets. It's a must while in Brasov.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 23 August 2024
- GarryUKNewbury, United Kingdom415 contributionsOozes history. A trip back in time. This church is amazingly well preserved considering how old it is. It is a real gem, a trip back in history. So much is from the 14th and 15th centuries. Strongly recommend a visit. In the ticket office is a very high class gift shop as well.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 September 2024

Utterly disappointed by the ban on taking interior photos. You can literally take photos at all major cathedrals in the world, but somehow this one is the most valuable. Staff was generally rude hunting people to stop them from taking photos, the price ticket is pretty much pointless since you can't even shoot inside it, info about it was brief. Also it was closed on Sunday and the schedule itself is dumb and not visitor oriented.

A very grand and beautiful church in the very center of the city. There are many paintings and carpets in the middle of the church, but the entrance fee is unreasonably high (20 per person). Compared to other places with paid entrance - I cannot recommend buying a ticket

Firstly, it’s probably not as black you will expect it to be! One of our group was a bit disappointed. Full adult price was 15 lei (10 lei for students). During the summer they have volunteer student guides and one of these guys took us around to show us the highlights - Tudor’s English was flawless and so was his knowledge of the history of the building (eg the holes on the outside aren’t from bullets but from the claws they used to construct the building).
Definitely worth a visit given the price and if you get the chance, take a small tour with the volunteer guides and give them a small tip to help with their studies.

One of the biggest churches in Romania.Impressive if you look at it from the outside. The clocks on the bell tower are very beautifully restored. Inside the situation changes. The interior is rather dull, almost not adorned at all, there aren't much religious paintings or cult objects.

The Black Church it’s a must see while in Braşov. It have the largest ottoman tapestry in the world on display and plenty of history with baroque imprints to Lutheran reformation to fulfill the thirst of a novice and an expert. The main Organ it’s also the largest one in Romania.

The city landmark just few meters from the main square. The name Black church derives from the color of its blackened walls. No more black now. The church has the largest bell in Romania (6300 kg). The church completed during the 15th century and belongs to the final stages of Gothic architecture. Be advised that the entrance is not for free 15 lei Adults / 10 lei seniors and students.

A place full of history, which generates a special experience. On hot days you benefit from the cold here. Now, on Saturday evening, between 6pm and 7pm, the organ concert season opened. For information about them you can access their Web page.

The Church looks very interesting, expecially the medieval frescos that surveved both fire and reformation. However the experience with the shop Staff (you buy tickets and gifts there) far from standard. The shop assistant shouting at our kids for opening a book and commenting to me that it's shop not a kindergarden. And they were silent and not touching anything that could be broken or damaged. Not a shop but a museum this should be called. And The lady Was first Romanian that Was impolite during our two weekend stay. Anyway hope the lady'll get better one day!

The Black Church, a place of worship and tourist attraction known to tourists from all over Europe and beyond. But why the name Black Church? On 21 April 1689, Brasov was almost completely engulfed by a great fire. In addition to damaging the town, the fire also damaged the church, destroying the roof and the furniture inside. The remaining ruin, blackened by smoke, was called the Black Church by the locals. It is an imposing building with beautiful architecture. It is a beautiful monument, which must be visited when you pass through Brasov. It is a well maintained monument, tidy and quiet.
