The drawbridge was replaced by a stone bridge from 1537. The bridge crosses a moat which is now a green space. Pile Gate or “Vrata od Pila” is one of the two main gates in this medieval walled city and is the main entrance into the fortified Old Town of Dubrovnik. It is very interesting to see the fortification and the size of the massive city walls when viewed from the top of the wall. The Pile Gate, built in the mid-16th century on the western side of the walls, is a strong defensive structure built on different levels. It looks like a tower that connects two bridges located above the moat of the walls and leads to a second internal door. In a niche above the oval arch stands a small statue of St. Blaise, the patron saint of Dubrovnik. He appears to be cradling Dubrovnik in his arms. From this gate there is also a nice view of the Lavrijenac fort. You walk along a little bridge that you can imagine was once above a moat to access the gate. Pile Gate is fairly close to the Tourist Office and the area where most of the tour buses leave from. There are also restaurants and shops near the gate. It is worth a visit.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 January 2024

- SimeyWimeyWhitstable, United Kingdom893 contributionsEntrance to cityOne of a number of gates to get in. Probably the most popular due to its proximity to the bus stops. There is a plaza and meeting place with a good view, ice cream shop, tourist information and a newsagent souvenir shop (with air con) over the road are 2 mini markets where you can get fruit and drinks for your day. A little further up the road is jojo burger and a Superb little bakery with local pasties and bureks. Get loaded up here before you pass through the gates to explore. Observe the one way line as you enter the city!Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 May 2024

Bus stops to Dubrovnik Port and Ferry also go from there. There was also lots of traffic if you wanted to get a cab anywhere.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 August 2024

The bus from our Princess Cruise ship dropped us off right in front of the Pile Gate, which is the main entrance to the Dubrovnik Old Town. We weren’t on a tour, but this is apparently a meeting place where all the tour guides meet their tour groups, because it was very busy and crowded. Because of the crowd, there wasn't much of an opportunity to closely examine the gate or entrance. Constructed in 1537, the gate had a moat-like trench with an old-timey wooden drawbridge which was pulled up at night to prevent outsiders or intruders from entering the city. Now days, the bridge is always down and the gate open. Recently the gate has also served as a filming location for the Game of Thrones series, making it a favorite place for visitors to stop for a photo op. After you pass through the main gate, you can continue straight on to the Stradum (Main Street of the Old Town) or take the nearby stairs and climb to the top of the ancient wall that circles the old city. We choose to climb and walk around the top of the wall, exploring the city from above before going into the city itself on the ground level. It took about two hours to go completely around the wall, but it was a fantastic experience. (PaM)

Built in 1537 and derived from the Greek word "pylaj" (meaning gate).
In medieval times it used to have a wooden drawbridge that was pulled up every evening.
Above the entrance you see the statue of Sveti Vlaho, the patron saint of Dubrovnik.

We visited the Old Town of Dubrovnik a number of times during our recent holiday in the region.
Although there are other gates entrances this 15th century gateway is the most famous and used, as result it can be rather busy.
We accessed the Old Town through this gate which was reached by walking over a stone bridge, this once spanned a moat, which is no longer there.
Above the gate is a statute of Saint Blaise (Sveti Vlaho) the patron saint of Dubrovnik. The Feast of Saint Blaise is celebrated each year on the 3rd of February.
The statue stands in between the remains of the old drawbridge access to the Town. It is long gone and was replaced by the stone bridge that is there today.
Having passed through the gate we walked down the steps, there is also a ramp, which took us to the Stradun, the Town’s main street.

This is the main entrance in to the Dubrovnik Old Town. It is very interesting to see the fortification and the size of the massive city walls here and consider that it has been there since 1537. Although it is now gone, you can easily imagine the draw bridge that once was there. There is a statue of St. Blaise there and then great maps of the city layout hung on the wall. This entrance takes you right to the main street of the city, the Stradun. First thing you come to is a great fountain which, like most fountains in the city, is fed by water from the surrounding hills so it is quite pure and you can fill your water bottles from it.

This is the most popular entrance to the Old Town of Dubrovnik. It’s like you are entering Disneyland. You can see the tourist descending on the city by 9am once the cruise ships start dropping off busloads or people.
It’s still an impressive entrance and At Blaise is over the door to bless and welcome you. This entrance drops you at the beginning of the Stradum. It’s a great place to start your tour/exploration of Dubrovnik. Enjoy!!!

The Pile Gate is the main entrance into the walled city / old town. It opens up to the west, to the biggest part of the more modern city, as well as the cruise ship port. It was very crowded most of the time we were there, with several tour groups usually standing just inside learning about the city.
The entrance to the gate is grand, with a large stone bridge crossing into an archway, with a statue of St. Blaise (the patron saint of Dubrovnik) over it. Once inside, there's a relatively large area with ramps and stairs where the tour groups congregate and you can see the city walls above. It's a grand but definitely crowded entrance - we only stayed a couple minutes and then headed farther into the city itself.

This is the main entrance in to the Dubrovnik Old Town. A very busy location as it sits near the bus station and cruise ship bus drop off point. Pile gate is just so busy, didn’t really want to spend too much time there. While Dubrovnik is a beautiful city with a rich history, the high volume of tourists also during shoulder season can make it difficult to fully enjoy the sights and sounds. We hope that in the future, the local authorities will take steps to mitigate overcrowding and create a more comfortable experience for all visitors.

I visited the Croatian Tour Dubrovnik on a walk through the old town. It is a stone gate located west of the city walls and is now the main gate for sightseeing in the old town. In front of the gate, there was a bus and taxi drop-off area, a tourist information center and a souvenir shop, which were crowded with tourists. It consists of an outer gate built in 1537 and an inner gate dating back to 1460, with a gun turret above the gate, indicating that it was an important defence. It is also said that the bridge over the moat used to be a drawbridge to prevent enemy attacks. Above the arch of the outer gate is a sculpture of Saint Vlaho, patron saint of Dubrovnik.

Has anybody used The airport shuttle to the pile gate?
Written 14 May 2019
Yes, I did, it fast and much cheaper than a Taxi, but you have to walk about 150 meters to the gate.

What is the procedure for wheelchair visitors to the city walls of old Dubrovnik? I heard that I enter the city bus in the middle. Do I buy the tickets from a tobacco shop or am I free or what?
Written 15 April 2019
Hi
Going through the city is free, but getting on the wall you have to purchase a ticket and there are some stairs which is difficult to get a person up in a well chair.

Cost of taxi from port to Pile Gate and will driver accept Euros?
Written 23 August 2018
I am sure they would take euros. I do not have a cost, but don't feel it would be very much. I cannot help further as we took a bus to Dubrovnik then caught a local bus to the Pile Gate and it was very inexpensive.

If the buses from the airport drop off at Pile Gate are there lots of steps to get to Buza House at Dura Baljevi.? Elderly!!
Written 3 June 2018
I can't add much more to what others have said. But...
From what I remember we did walk down that way. It is relatively easy walking from the Bus Stop down the main street in the centre of the old town, then at the bottom of that it looks like you turn off to the left according to Google Maps. I think that you may encounter a few steps along your route but towards the end but mostly there are sensible ramps. There are cobbles though so be sure of your footing in the wet as they can be slippy.
