There is also washrooms, gift shop and refreshments on site. Next to the museum is the Thurston Gardens.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 December 2023
- NinaSydney, Australia3 contributionsBeautiful Refurbishment but Missing Pieces at the Fiji MuseumI recently visited the Fiji Museum during my holiday and had a wonderful experience overall. Here’s a comprehensive review of my visit: Positives: Beautiful Refurbishment: The museum has undergone a stunning refurbishment, making it a delight to explore. The updated interiors are both aesthetically pleasing and conducive to learning. 'Voyages' Exhibition: The addition of the 'Voyages' exhibition is a highlight. It provides fascinating insights into the seafaring history of Fiji and the Pacific Islands. The exhibits are well-curated, informative, and engaging, offering a deep dive into the maritime heritage of the region. Negatives: Missing Collection Pieces: Unfortunately, some of the collection was missing during my visit. It was disappointing not to see certain artifacts that I had hoped to view. Closed Areas: Several areas of the museum were not open, which I assume are still awaiting work. It would have been nice to have access to the entire museum, but it’s understandable given the ongoing refurbishment efforts. Overall Impression: Despite the few negatives, my visit to the Fiji Museum was enjoyable and educational. The new exhibitions and refurbishments have significantly enhanced the visitor experience. I look forward to returning once all areas are open and the full collection is back on displayVisited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 July 2024

We stayed for about 30 mins. That was long enough to have a wonder through with my 5yr old twins.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 10 August 2024
- Mandy MAuckland, New Zealand30 contributionsFiji museum self guidedWell worth a visit and if you are a senior ask for the concession price. If visiting as part of a cruise then the museum is within an easy walk of where the boat docks - just follow the waterfront path and where it goes inland follow main road past the sports ground and you are there. Level walk. You do not need taxi or tour.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 17 September 2024

A small museum consisting of one room showcasing Oceanic cultural artefacts and an adjacent desi (Indian) exhibit. The native Fijian and Kiribatian objects were top notch rarities, as is the boat the occupies the centerpiece of the main room. Overall, however, it is disappointing that a nation with such a rich history, composed of so many anthropological flavors, could not muster a more comprehensive, up-to-date exhibition. DNA has told us a lot of Austraonesian, Polynesian, Melanesian migrations; there is so much information about the social-political organization of local clans and their customs; the museum avoids the effort through a few anecdotes. Much more could also be done with the garden, which occupies prime real estate in Suva.

A great little museum I liked that there was an emphasis on thanking care of the ocean for future generations. The journey theme was effective as a way to understand the history of the people who live in Fiji now.
I learnt a lot.

Please be aware that the Museum has been closed for a refurbishment now for well over 3 years. The coffee shop is open, everything else is shut, the locals know but it is not advertised as being no longer open, even its website gives its opening hours. I organised a driver and car specially to show them the museum as well as my old house in Suva. Museum closed and the road to the house closed both ways.

For a country with alot of recorded history this museum does a terrible job at showing it. More of a exhibition gallery than a museum, with the random items, games & plastic fashion displays. Attached Souvenir shop was okay. Only worth the visit because it's really rare to see any Fijian artifact anywhere else. $5 current entry fee.

This museum helps you to understand the history and demographics of Fiji. This is a small but interesting museum. You will gain insight into it's indigenous people as well as understand why Fiji had such a large Indian population, to the extent that the 3 languages spoken in Fiji are Fijian, English and Hindi. If you want to bring home a conversation piece, go to the git shop and get a cannibal fork.

Getting confused with what is available whilst visiting Vita Levu....would like to do a tour to see as much as we can on the day whilst in port, definitely do not want to waste time seeing lagoons and waterfalls. Someone suggested we hire a taxi and haggle over price and maybe miss out on info or perhaps just do the self guided walk around town? We are due there on 29th April.

How far is it from the cruise ship port in Fiji to the museum? Wondering whether to walk or take a taxi. If the latter, what is a fair price to pay?
Written 10 February 2018
You most certainly can walk about 10 mn, it’s right across the Grand Pacific but a cab should take you there for less than 10 $
Written 19 February 2018
Yes, you can take pictures in the Fiji Museum

Hello. My daughter would like to find out more about Fijian art (particularly tapa-based) but we are only in Suva for one day (Monday 2 January) as we will be on a cruise. I wanted to make sure the museum is open and was wondering if there is a guide who could give her some information about your displays? Thank you.
Written 20 December 2016
Yes there is a guide employed by the Museum who will guide you in everything you need to know
