The cooking class at Flavours of Fiji, with Maria in particular, is a MUST when visiting Nadi, Fiji. Everything about the experience was top notch. From the warm, welcome greeting by Maria at the van that met us at our hotel and transported us to the class. To the rich experience of culture, tradition, and family stories shared throughout the class. To the delicious native meals that we prepared and then ate together as a group. It was all just spectacular. Maria is an excellent teacher. Her communication is clear and thorough. And her sweet and feisty disposition is fun to be around. My friends and I took this class and agreed it was a highlight of our trip. I look forward to making these dishes again at home. Thank you Flavours of Fiji. If I return to Nadi, I will definitely come back. And next time, I’ll also sign up for the market tour.

We did the market tour and cooking class during our short stay in Fiji and it was the highlight of our trip. They picked us up at our hotel and gave us a very informative tour of the main marketplace in Nadi. We learned about local fruits, vegetables and seafood as well as how they are utilized for cooking and medicinal purposes. Afterwards we were shuttled to the cooking school where we learned how to prepare three traditional Fijian dishes and three Indian dishes. In between the two courses we sat and enjoyed the delicious food we had made. The instructors made the class fun and provided so much interesting information. This was a wonderful day we will never forget! Thank you Flavours of Fiji!!

The day started at a respectable 9.20am with a pick up from the Westin in Denarau. We were whisked away by 2 staff members to the local fresh market in nearby Nadi town, a hort 15min drive. We were very luck that we were the only 2 booked for the day. The market portion lasted apx 55mon and was a good over view of the local products and some background information on farming & traditional practices. It was unhurried and no pressure to buy anything. The kava and spice stalls were the most interesting for us. After the tour it was a quick trip back to the cooking school near the Marina. Once ther a large Bula welcome by Maria who would be 1 of our chefs for the day. The class kicked off with a quick health and safety sign off.. seems even in Pacific Paradise the pencil pushers are finding a home!! The room was very well laid out with all the cooking utensils. The professional approach was impressive for a group of self confessed 'home cooks' I'd recommend having a very light, to no breakfast on the day. I'm a BIG boy at 120kg and I was full after all the courses, didnt finish the last roti or curry dish. The team offer to pack away any leftovers for you to enjoy back at the hotel. All the ingredients are carefully prepared before you arrive. They are placed in small metal dishes, making the cooking very enjoyable and straightforward. You make 3 dishes simultaneously. Once cooked you sit down at a large wooden table to eat. Once finished you begin the second set. On our day, as it was our 1st time, we chose a chicken curry and fish dish as our mains. The benefit is that the menu changes to suit you, you could come 3 days in a row and not cook the same dish. At the end of the day they have a short fun 'quiz' afterwards there is a presentation of your cooking certificates. A nice touch and memento to show off! The return dropoff to your hotel is apx 2pm. Allowing for a well earned afternoon nap & swim before cocktail hour. Bula!!!

The market tour was ok but you felt like a dummy with everything explained over and over. Upon arriving at the cook school you were shown, as a dummy, how to open a coconut - took about 20 minutes - very basic and boring. All prep was done for you so it was like Hitler shouting instructions on which spoon and bowl to use constantly. The food cooked was horrible and the desserts very over sweet. The biggest disappointment in Fiji and the one I was most looking forward to. Certainly wouldn't use any recipes or techniques again.

Thank you for taking the time to address your issues with Flavours of Fiji Cooking School. We would have gladly discussed these issues with you after our cooking class. Our local Nadi Market is one of the main fresh produce hubs in western Fiji abuzz with activity from the local farming community. As our guests come from diverse cultural backgrounds and age groups, our guides are instructed to ensure that communication is audible, clear and understandable to all. We apologise if our guide’s attempts to communicate offended you, making you feel like a “dummy”. Also, as our staff are of Fijian & Indo-Fijian backgrounds with English being a second language, we continually support and encourage their development and appreciate guests’ acknowledgement of that. Also, in regards to feeling like a “dummy” during our coconut cracking and scraping demonstration, again we aim to make our presentations suitable to a diverse group. I take great offence to you likening my staff to “Hitler”. We pride ourselves in our professionalism and do not profess to be anything but an authentic local cooking school in the Fiji Islands. We are incredibly proud of our Fijian & Indo-Fijian flavours and celebrate our local food culture with pride. It is unfortunate that you find our authentic local food “horrible” and obviously it is not to your liking. We would like to apologise if you felt that you were treated like a “dummy”, as this was certainly not our intention. Also, we apologise if we were unable to meet your ideals and expectations of Fiji’s local food culture.

We had such a wonderful time at our cooking class at Flavours of Fiji. We have been looking for something like this for a while. This cooking school is really well laid out and the preparation that goes into the class makes it easy to include cooks and non-cooks. It is a 3 hour class with 2 hours for the cooking and an hour for eating and enjoying the fruit of your labour!
It was great to experience coconut scraping and to learn about all the local ingredients even though we didn't go to the markets. In particular, the tree fronds were very interesting.
The blend between Fijian and Indian food was very well done! Perhaps in the future there can be more specific classes for each cuisine? That way we can learn a little more.
Thanks so much to Eci, Naomi, Sachil and Vikashni!

Attended the class last week and was impressed by the layout! Was greeted with a fresh coconut when I arrived. Our host then introduced us to the world of food in Fiji by showing us the market stall which demonstrates a lot of the produce currently available in the local markets. She went through each product, explaining what it was and how it was used. We then were Shown how coconut was scraped to make into coconut milk and got us to try it out for ourselves which was pretty cool (I wasn't sure if I was doing it the right way, but the host looked impressed).

We then went on to the cooking stations to begin the class. The dishes were pretty easy to get the hang of. I was surprised how straight forward the local food is to make. We did a Fijian desert using a relative of the banana called vudi, then a fish dish with coconut milk, then we did a couple of local curries. The cook was lovely and the staff were very helpful and attentive , making sure I didn't over cook anything. Afterwards, we took all the prepared food to the main dining table and enjoyed what we had made. I was pretty amazed how good it tasted (better than a lot of the stuff I've tried locally!), considering I'm not exactly the best chef in the world! My favorite was the chicken curry! I was completely stuffed at the end and enjoyed chatting with the other people who were also at the course. At the end we were all given a certificate congratulating us on becoming local master chefs! Overall, It was a wonderful experience and I would love to do it again. This is definitely something you need to do when you're in Nadi or Denarau. Well worth it!

We went to the cooking school as a party of 5, actually 2 of us wanted to go (ladies) and the other 3 (men) were not so keen, but by the time we finished the other 3 were raving about it, they all made the dishes and ate them, turned out they love things they didn’t before, learnt so much and it was made so easy. Delicious food, really lovely teachers and helpers, they made the whole experience fun and we learnt so much. If you have the opportunity do the class, you will be so happy you did.

Signed up for the market tour and cooking experience. Lovely hosts. The cooking was easy, most everything prepared - so not so much a cooking class but a cooking and eating experience - just like it says on the label - Flavours of Fiji - Native Fijian flavours and Indi-Fijian flavours - two halves of the day.

Most of the other reviews I've seen here are spot on. Our only collective complaint is we didn't realise there were to be TWO lunches. We may have paced ourselves a litle bit better.

But take away containers were provided and most of us had provisions for another meal, or midnight feast.

Highly recommended indeed.
