Went out of curiousity and also becasue one of our party hadn't been to church for years. About 2/3 were Kiwi, mostly sitting at the back. The Cook Island ladies wear white dresses and straw hats and the men white jackets and pants. The Minister welcomes the visitors in English but the rest is mostly in their language. The singing is great. There is an opportunity to give in the offering. We enjoyed the experience but thought the preaching could have a bit of English to maybe give a bit of spiritual uplift to visitors who might not regularly go to church. Lovely people who made us feel welcome.

Never before have I enjoyed church services as much as I did in the South Pacific. The singing is simply amazing and incredibly uplifting. One of our nicest experiences was at the CICC chuch just along the road from Muri in Raratonga. We were all personally welcomed into the church and afterwards invited by one of the elders to partake of food and refreshments. It was a good opportunity to hear more about the history of the Cook Islands and their islanders and to meet other travellers. The church really went out of their way to welcome us and even today several months after the church service I still want to rave about the ladies decorative straw hats in the congregation.

Yes, the singing of the women, children and men is really lovely. However, we tourists should be aware that the singing is in a Church and that the local people take their Sunday services very seriously. They dress up and expect other attendees to show respect. I heard an elder indignantly ask a young man in thongs, shorts and singlet sitting near the outside entrance: "Do you think this is the beach?". So if you do go, wear appropriate clothing that will not offend. Also, don't take the seats from the local regular attendees. It is a very popular service.

WOW!
The singing from this choir was beautiful.
This is the place to experience the local culture.
You should not miss out on this opportunity during your stay.
The service takes place every Sunday and everything is totally free. You may give a donation to the church if you wish.
After the service you are invited to a free buffet lunch. Everyone is made to feel welcome. The food served was lovely.
Thank you for sharing your culture and the wonderful hospitality!

As visit to Church when you are in the Cook Islands is a beautiful experience. Sunday service starts at 10am. The entry should be by the back door - the front door is reserved for the minister and special guests. Ladies should have covered shoulders and no short skirts or shorts. A hat should also been worn. The service is in a mix of English and Maori but the singing is something else! I got goosebumps whenever the singing started. The men and women naturally harmonise and create beautiful music. Don't forget some money for the collection. The service goes for around one hour. Highly recommended.

We attended the 10.00 o'clock service. We were warmly welcomed and felt comfortable. We were welcomed in English and it was explained to us that the service would be in both Maori Island and english language. Very uplifting and the singing was so beautiful. We were made very welcome and invited to go for a cuppa and lunch after the service. Very enjoyable and well worth the experience.

The missionaries decimated the Cook Islands population and eliminated all native cultures...and now the islanders respect them with these massive churches. Church, religion, and missionaries are a waste of time--stay away!

We, my husband and I recently stayed at the Muri Beach Club Hotel and attended a Sunday morning service at the nearby Cook Islands Christian Church. We received a warm welcome on arrival, and guided to seating. A beautiful experience hearing the amazingly talented harmonious strong voices of the parishioners' singing fill this lovely church. The service and hymns were given in a mixture of English & the local Maori language. This was followed by a friendly morning tea afterwards. Thank you to the parishioners for sharing this experience with us.
