I liked this little neighborhood in the heart of Santiago, it felt like I was in a European city. Its cobbled streets, adorned with historic buildings and street art, create a bohemian and vibrant atmosphere. Lastarria is the perfect place for those who love culture, art and gastronomy. You will find a wide variety of restaurants, cafes and bars, as well as art galleries and theatres.

Okay maybe I'm missing something...the area is very small, just a few streets, with nothing but tourists stalls to recommend it and all of those are set up in one small area. There does not seem anything in particular to do or see. Don't think you learn or experience about Santiago by coming here. Just a walk through suffices.

A hip neighborhood with plenty of history, there are many historic and beautiful buildings as well as cool restaurants, cafes and boutique record and book stores. Reminded me of hip neighborhoods in Melbourne, Australia such as Fitzroy.
Make sure to try the delicious ice cream at the famous Emporio La Rosa. Tip: You have to pay first, obtain a ticket, then walk over to the ice cream section and hand it to them. You can ask to taste test different valors before making a decision.

The streets are busy with sellers of books and maps and antiques and lots of other items and there are wonderful restaurants and bars as well. We stayed in this area 2 years ago and loved it - a happening place a night, and frankly during the day as well. We have been going back each day to try a new restaurant. It backs up to the GAM museum and is a fun place to wander. Check out Jose Ramon for artisenal Evers and good burgers, Bocanariz for 250 different option of Chilean wines and wonderful food, or a number of other street side restaurants offering food, beer or ice cream. You will keep going back!

Barrio Lastarria neighbourshood is considered to be safe; however, we learned about reported robbery attempts at intersection of José Victorino Lastarria & Av. Libertador Bernardo O’Higgins. Please be aware, don't wear jewelry, don't have anything in your hands (phone, purse, backpack, camera, etc.) that can be violently snatched.

We visited this area on a recent trip to Buenos Aires. This area has a Bohemian culture with an artistic vibe. Barrio Lastarria is one of the most beautifully maintained historic places in Chile and you can take a walk through pathways which embrace houses built in the 19th century, a burst of cafes and restaurants and a bohemian ambience which is simply Chile at its best! We really enjoyed wander wandering through the Parque Forestal which was an oasis like setting amongst the trees.

One of the vendor there, a woman who sells fabric stamps or stickers was very upset because we didn't buy all her stickers and according to her we left a messy stand. Of course she was upset and complained about the no purchase to everyone. We did not buy a thing because went out of proportion. Upsetting experience with this woman who stays across a museum and coffee venues
Her lost was someone else's gain.

Very good option to go for drinks or dinner in a very picturesque neighborhood.
There are many options for shops, bookstores, cafes, restaurants, etc.
This is the middle option between Bellavista and Barrio Italia in terms of prices and eating options.

While we enjoyed a nice meal and a quick stroll through this area, there was not much to see. The park was lovely, but there are nicer parks in the city. The graffiti post-protests remains prolific; it is EVERYWHERE (as is the smell of pot, truth be told). There is some cool architecture, but we enjoyed other areas (such as Barrio Italia) more.

A nice walk worth taking when visiting Santiago. Near Santa Lucia Hill. Its streets invite you to walk and there is a varied offer to eat. High prices. There is a small artisan fair on the tour.

We have a 7 hour layover in Santiago and are looking for some ideas to pass the time. Would a visit to Barrio Lastarria be a good option to spend a couple of hours, get something to eat, etc? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks
Written 19 December 2016
Hello!
It would be a good choice, but I'd would also recommend to you to visit the Bellavista neighbourhood. They have a lot of places to eat there, ant shops and Pablo Neruda's home, which is worth a visit. :-)
Also in Bellavista, there is a restaurant you must try. It is called Como Agua Para Chocolate, and if you like fish, you need to have their congrĂo dish, which comes with congrĂo (a fish typical from Chile)with cheese and almonds crust in a bed of spinach cream. It is divine!!!
Hope this helps! And go back to Santiago with more time...you gonna love it!
