Do not be put off by the external graffiti and the temporary metal on the exterior doors.
The interior is fabulous with an outstanding, parquetry floor. A lovely haven from the hustle and bustle of central Santiago.

It is such a shame that the exterior has so much graffiti, a reflection on what is happening across Santiago.

Centrally located and a beautiful building hard to miss.
The sign out front is hard to read due to graffiti.
Once inside take your time and look at all the religious art.

One of the most beautiful and artistic churches on downtown Santiago which gave the name of the colonial Merced Street is the Basilica de la Merced church. The friars have preserved most of the ancient artistic pieces collected for years to embellish the temple. It is of special beauty the main image of Our Lady of Mercy over the central altar. The image was a donation of the Emperor Charles V. The cabinet is of massive silver. There is also a second image of the virgin close to the main entrance dated to the XVII century. The crucifix on the right lateral altar close to the door which communicates with the cloister is a donation of King Phillip II masterfully carved of indescribable beauty. If you have the chance to visit the basilica on the 24th September feast of Our Lady of Mercy you should, the church will be fully lightened then and all the friars participating on the principal mass of the day. If you walk by MacIver Street from the corner to the south at the end of the building you will find the entrance to the museum on the second floor. It homes a nice collection of chalices and mass ornaments and the famous collection of images in cristal domes (fanales) that was started and completed by Friar Morales historian to the Order.

The church is a little different from the rest and is that what makes it so beautiful.
It's very close to the Plaza de Armas.
Sometimes the front entrance is closed, try the one on the side.

The church dates from the 18th century. It is a Chilean national monument. Be sure to visit the small museum next store. It houses religious artifacts and some pieces from Eater Island. The garden is very tranquil. Check the hours for when the church is open.

This is so much more atmospheric than the cathedral - a truly wonderful sanctuary in the heart of town to spend some time in.
