- Untung TManila, Philippines153 contributionsMost convenient and affordable way to commuteOn this visit we stayed in Sha Tin. From University station going to downtown or any of the tourist attractions, it appeared to be far. However, travelling with a 2 year old, it was quite convenient. We hardly encountered crowded trains, even during rush hour. On our last day we visited disneyland and the mtr ride was very comfortable, except of the disneyland train. It was packed. It was so crowded, we hardly had space to stand.Visited March 2023Travelled with familyWritten 4 April 2023
- Mindkandy126 contributionsThe best subway systemYou already know this is one of the world's best subway systems. Clean, fast, with incredibly frequent service (usually every 2 minutes). Here are a few drawbacks: 1) MTR stations are huge and you'll do a lot of walking to get out of them. The sprawling junction of Kowloon, West Kowloon, and High-Speed rail stations is incredibly confusing. 2) MTR stations will get you close to your destination, but buses can often be more convenient to board and will get you within steps of where you want to go. 3) Absolutely do not take the MTR during rush hours!!Visited March 2023Written 8 April 2023
- Moisy9944 contributionsClean and efficientThe MTR is a cheap and efficient way to get around Hong Kong. The stations and carriages are modern and clean. Make sure you queue as indicated on the platform. Stand to the right-hand side of the escalators, the left-hand side is for people who choose to walk. The locals are respectful and courteous, so follow their good example.Visited April 2023Written 21 April 2023
- bob2bkkBangkok, Thailand5,975 contributionsWay around Hong KongMTR is Hong Kong's subway and rail system. It connects all of Hong Kong, the Island, and Kowloon in addition to providing access to Hong Kong International Airport. I suggest you buy a top-up Octopus Card, and if you are a senior, ask for the senior card. It allows for a major discount. There is a deposit fee of 50 HK$ plus your top up, 50 HK$ is enough. You will get all this back when you depart HK, less a small fee. Well worth it. Can be used on subway, trams, busses, and other means of transport. Some old subway stations are not disabilities friendly. Check ahead if you are going to a specific station. The trams are also not wheelchair accessible.Visited April 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 3 May 2023

We bought one day Tourist cards for unlimited travel each day (H$65) then when we had some cash just bought single fare tickets. I bought an Octopus card and got partly refunded at the Airport for un-used credit I was there for 3 days and used Trains, buses and a boat for less than $10.00 a day over the 3 days. I went up on the 360 cable car to the Big Buddha and used the Octopus card to go to Tai O on the bus from the Big Buddha. The railway map and instructions are straightforward, and this is, in my opinion, one of the best-established subway systems in the world. The MTR exits are accessible to most of the iconic spots in Hong Kong, which could be a convenience for tourists on their travel itinerary. Be sure to have your Octopus card ready; it will make your journey more convenient. Ticket machines and service counters are also available on sight. Super easy and very safe airport and city transport at a reasonable price (airport to Kowloon £10). Very rapid, approx 30mins to downtown. Immaculately clean and respected by passengers and tourists alike. Every city should have a transport system like this.

This is a must and to master the MTR is not difficult – It will take you anywhere and everywhere – it is recommended you buy an Octopus Card at the airport and load it with whatever you think you will need depending on the time you are there - not to worry the Card has a deposit of $50 which is returned less a card fee of $11 and also all the unused money on the card – you can use the card on the MTR, Buses, Taxi’s Restaurants and Shops – it is the way to go

A simple transportation network that covers most tourist destination in Hong Kong, except the Victoria Peak. MTR is my main transport during my visit. It gets me to Disneyland, Causeway Bay, Central, Tsim Sha Tsui, and so on in a simple and easy way. Using an Octopus Card is highly recommended as it gives you convenience when tapping in and out of the station.
The MTR to Disneyland Resort is a must to take for travelers heading there.

Cost us 22 dollars to go from central to north point. Thought it was expensive when the Star Ferry line only cost 4 dollars.

For a group of 5 persons, what do you suggest to take to go to the Dorsett hotel in Tsuen Wan? Taxi can only accommodate 4 persons at most. Thanks.
I will be arriving late around 11pm at the HK airport. What should I take to go to Dorsett Hotel at Tsuen Wan? Thanks in advance.

Hi All. Need some help regarding Octopus cards.
Can tourists avail the Elder Octopus Card? If yes, what are the requirements needed?
Is there any specific area - i.e. Arrival Hall at L5 in HKIA - where we can avail one?
Thank you in advance!

morning and evening rush hours could create a problem for you if you have a stroller occupying some space. though the MTR has great connectivity and stations are present every 1km, but the walks inside the station could be long and use of escalators is quite possible. daily passes can be taken on good rates and its quite an economical option as compared to taxis. overall it can be done smoothly because the train cars are not very crowded on many lines

My flight is arriving at 10:40 pm.
What time does the last airport express leave to catch the shuttles or should I just take a taxi to my hotel?

Last airport express to the city is around 12.15. But if you are a group of 2 or more then the taxi is more or less the same price.

Is there an Uber at Hong-Kong?
County-Hunter
Tacoma, WA3,197 contributions
Yes, but taxis are plentiful and cheap and the only time we had to wait for one was at 4:30am on. Sunday morning to get to the airport. The concierge called one for us and it showed up in 3 minutes.
Does uber operates 24hours in Hong-Kong? Can I simply get an Uber ride to airport at 3am?

Uber is not straight forward. Lots of huhs and has. I wouldn’t rely on Uber. Use regular taxis instead. Convenient prices. Crazy drive though...

We are having a great time. At the moment the protests are peaceful and HK is relatively empty of tourists so it’s a win-win.

Looking for any advice on the "Sold Tourist Octopus card" versus the regular Octopus card. Has anyone purchased the Sold Tourist Octopus in advance online and picked it up at the airport?

Hi,
Good advice ... BUY OCTOPUS TICKET IN HONG KONG AIRPORT EXPRESS COUNTER ... understand there are various types of tickets: i.e. 1 type: just for airport express service (about $25 USA dollars) get your from airport to center of downtown Hong Kong). Octopus card gets you on & off subways, etc IN TOWN ONLY + you can use as debit card to get food, water, services, in area of subways. Then there is the Octopus Card (for seniors) makes the cost of subway ride about 25¢ per ride - great bargain + use as debit card. LOOK IT UP - Duck, Duck Go!!! Yo`r in the "know" Know!!
