Top ways to experience Wan Chai
The area
Neighbourhood: Wan Chai / Causeway Bay
Wan Chai and Causeway Bay are the retail centres of Hong Kong Island. Filled with shops, malls and restaurants, both areas are bustling with people – tourists and locals alike. Causeway Bay has one of the highest rents on the planet, and is a bit more polished and modern than its Wan Chai counterpart. Beneath the surface there is more than meets the eye – find boutique stores in the above ground floors of buildings and wander into side streets to find interesting restaurants and shops tucked away from the main roads. Wan Chai especially has experienced a modern revival in recent times, with an influx of trendy restaurants and bars around the Star Street area. In addition, both areas contain many of Hong Kong’s iconic tourist attractions worthy of your visit.

Usually our walking trip to HK’s fantastic Causeway Bay will also include part of Wan Chai, which is just short walk away but resonating with a different vibes. Served by a different MTR station the pace is much slower and more local, there’s wet market and even public food centres! Still Wan Chai ally has experienced more modern revival over the past years with an influx of trendy restaurants and bars. Think Lee Tong Street and more... With the many small side streets with small shops and kiosks, hidden shops, and cultural spots it is definitely a nice place to explore.
Wan Chai's HKCEC has been home to major political and economic events, it was the site of the Hong Kong handover ceremony in 1997 beamed across the world then. Best explored on foot Wan Chai District offers a wealth of heritage hideaways such as some historical conservation sites including Old Wan Chai Post Office, Hung Shing Temple and Pak Tai Temple. All of which we have visited in the many trips we made here. However there are mainly only medium-sized shopping centres palling to its famous neighbor.
Still we like to try out the various Cha chaan teng are local-styled fast-food restaurants, and Chinese pastry.
With the many modern hot spots of nightlife, dining, shopping or cultural — Definitely worth a trip for all.

🍕Mixed pizza

🍰Basque Burnt Cheese Cake

☕️Espresso Tonic

🍹Lychee Lemon Iced Tea

Area has a mixture of new upcoming shopping and restaurants mixed in with some rustic old building. Plenty of usual fast food such as McDonalds and KFC around. Some michelin restaurants such as Kam Roast Goose is in this area.

Decent place to go shopping when you are in Hong Kong. Even though we still had to wear masks outdoors in 2022 which was a shame, it was still quite fun to go outside and go shopping for a while. Excellent for those who are entertained in shopping and exploring.

Wan Chai is another shopping area like Causeway Bay but more low key. Many small side streets with small shops and kiosks. It is accessible by MTR with aptly named station. Surprisingly, I was able to find a cable for a charger that I could not find anywhere including Bangkok, where we live. So it may surprise you also. Walk thru Lee Tung Avenue, a pedestrian mall with cute shops, a Pizza Express and Dan Ryan's Chicago Grill. Most of this area is wheelchair accessible.

𓄹Poached eggs with chickpea hummus and crunchy vegetable which is amazing on tasting. Poached eggs match with creamy chickpea hummus.

𓄹Handmade seafood capellini must try dishes. I love that squid mix with crispy garlic.

𓄹Beef cheeks ravioli with Thai beef bouillon were surprisedly match which is yummy and tasty.

𓄹All around decor in this restaurant contains vintage and elegant elements .

I love Wan Chai. Although I live Mid-Levels I’d love to move to Wan Chai as I think it has it all, the markets, great people and a vibrant new atmosphere coupled with the old Style of Hong Kong. New and old buildings alike. The Blue House, wan chai market, Triangle Street for great fruit and vegetables. Cheap electrical shops. Head to Wan Chai pier to hop over to Tsim Sha Tsui for a couple of dollars (HKD). The Central Plaza Building is great for a fantastic view of HK. Get the lift to the 46th Floor for a stunning 360 view.

If you have several days in Hong Kong, Wan Chai is worth exploring. You don’t need a tour as it is easily explored on foot on your own. Allow an hour or two. Probably the best thing about Wan Chai is that you get to see old and modern Hong Kong, sitting alongside each other, cheek by jowl. You can be having a coffee, shopping or finding a wine bar in the smart new areas like Star & Ship Streets or Lee Tung Avenue and then a street or two away, you can turn a corner and find yourself at an open-air butcher’s selling horse tails, with live chickens next door.
If you’re coming from Central, a good way to start if is to jump on the ‘ding-ding’ tram which will take you through the centre of Wan Chai and which is a Hong Kong experience in itself.
What to See:
i) Hung Shing Temple – an easy and quick visit because it is on Queen’s Rd East, is quite small and entry is free. Inside it's all dramatic reds and golds, with smoky incense and statues of gods (see separate review)
ii) Wan Chai Rd Wet Market – it may not be for the squeamish but you’ll see the full range of traditional foods from live chickens to dried seafood. Alongside stalls of ‘1000 year old eggs’, there will be tanks of live fish, and sea creatures that you don't recognise and couldn't begin to know how to cook (I’m still wondering what those slug-like creatures are). The meat stalls can be downright confronting, with curious cuts of meat hanging in the heat while big cleavers are wielded on wooden chopping blocks.
iii) Market Streets & Lanes – Tai Yuen Street or ‘toy street’ is the most well known. There are several cheap and cheerful toy places but there's a wide assortment of goods (beads, jade-like ornaments, orchids, cheap clothing...).
iv) for a change of pace, head to the Starstreet precinct has galleries, street art, and upmarket restaurants, cafes and bars or Lee Tung Avenue which has shopping and cafes.

NOTE: If you want a more structured itinerary, there is a Wan Chai Heritage Trail, a 2hr self-guided walking trail that includes about 15 or so sites. However, it’s easy to just wander Wan Chai.

A great place to stay when visiting Hong Kong, public transport options are limitless and cheap. Loads of shops, markets, bars and restaurants to try in the busy spot on HK island.
