Awful service
Aug 2021 • Friends
Great island to spend the day and snorkel but do not eat there! The food and drinks are expensive and they are ALWAYS understaffed. We waited an hour and a half for meals that never came. Unfortunately this has not been my only bad experience there.
This spot has so much potential but is run by a company that clearly does not value its customers.

Day trip to Isle aux Canards
Jan 2020
There was a bit of a wait for the boat the day we went but it was worth it when we came there. Not too crowded and well organised. We chose to rent sun loungers and a parasol. The water was so clear, we could see the fish with the naked eye. My daughter loved that they came up and nudged her every now and then. We had some food which was also very good. You have to say what time you want to leave and go on that boat. I wish I had decided to stay longer, but not easy to know if the little one will like it or not. Toilets on the islands were clean and very accessible.

Duck Island Day Trip
Jan 2020 • Family
Duck island- great snorkelling very close to shore. Huge variety of fish and turtles. Colourful coral well preserved. Taxi boats very busy have to wait ages to get on on a Sunday.

Small island can walk around it in 10 minutes.

One small bar restaurant- VERY expensive $$$

Take your reef shoes and your own snorkel gear if you have it. Again very expensive to hire.

Island itself not that pretty but snorkelling is superb straight off the beach.

Boat trip over only 10 minutes. Can get a bit wild in rough seas of an afternoon.

Not too bad but pricey
Mar 2020 • Solo
Went to this Island on advice of fellow cruisers on second visit to Noumea.
Didn't get all the facts though.
$25 AUD including Hop on Hop Off bus on Noumea for the day gets water taxi to the small Island which is about a 5 min water trip after 10 mins on bus.
Once on the small Island it wasn't too crowded which I liked with plenty of chairs and private huts.
Unfortunately the chairs with umbrellas were $23 AUD each for the day and a big hut $76 AUD for the day.
Not super bad if you stay all day I suppose and budget for it. Noumea is expensive all round too.
Food and drink is then also expensive with soft drink $9 AUD a can. Beer was $11 AUD for 330ml local beer $17 AUD Heineken. Cocktails $24 AUD WOW
Snacks $14+ AUD and mains $36+ AUD.
I reckon maybe able to take a few cold cans across as no screening or apparent ban I could see.
Maybe pack lunch?
Swimming great with water very warm and coral with fish not far off shore.
Lot's saw turtles but I missed out.
Rain poured at 2pm on us making wet water taxi ride wait back and wet bus wait.
Rain poncho next time and plastic bag to keep clothes and towells dry.
Lovely spot to swim and relax otherwise.
Just a bit pricey and you have no choice but to pay their prices or byo

Convient Snorkeling
Mar 2020
There is a water taxis to the Island ($12.50 round trip). The trip to the island is short. The snorkeling was very good but there is significant current. The coral is in good shape. They offer beach chairs and umbrellas but they are costly. The shore is covered with broken coral. There is a restaurant and bar. They do rent snorkel equipment about $16.

Great Snorkeling
Feb 2020 • Couples
Duck Island is a short boat ride over from Anse Vata beach. You’ll pay for everything here - deck chairs, snorkeling gear and, obviously, food and drinks. And that pretty much covers the activities available- swimming, relaxing and topping up with sustenance. The island is quite small and one could walk around it in a matter of minutes. The reef has some excellent marine life, even including a turtle apparently although that studiously avoided our searches that day.

The restaurant/bar has a good range of offerings, not exactly cheap (thats New Calendonia) but very tasty and just what’s needed.

We would highly recommend this as a day or half day trip. Take sunscreen and cover your back and legs if you are going to explore the reef.

Nice Snorkeling
Feb 2020
Great snorkelling, only 10minute ride on a water taxi from Nomeau to get there. You can buy food & drinks here and hang out on a sun lounge under an umbrella in shade between snorkelling and eating and drinking. People complain that its about $40 AUD to hire the umbrella and sun lounge for 2 people but maybe forget that people also need to earn an income. You could easily spend the day hanging out here but a half day is also adequate. I was blown away by the ammount of different fish species I saw as well as some nice corals.

Not worth the money in 2020
Feb 2020 • Couples
I bet this place used to be great. However after spending $40 for x2 couples to get there, it really wasn't worth it. You have nowhere to sit unless you pay $46AUD for a chair. There are huge sandbags all over the shore and the sand isn't white or clean, it's sharp and rocky and there is dead coral EVERYWHERE. overtime tourists have bleached and killed the coral. When you snorkel, the water isn't clear, it is murky and all the corals are white. Nothing nice left to see. If you can manage to walk around without reef shoes, good job. Most people left because it hurt too much on their feet.

Lastly the workers there are terribly rude to tourists.
You will be much better off by going to anse Beach, clear waters, soft sand and we saw a few turtles.

Great day trip
Feb 2020 • Couples
This little island is a short 1500 XPF return taxi ride away. Had excellent coral reef snorkelling. Probably dont need to pay for a lounger if you only there a short time but was nice to rest up between snorkelling. You can hire all the gear and get alcoholic/non alcoholic drinks and some food there. Some English spoken. Sadly no turtles when we were there but an abundance of beautiful fish

A fun day out
Jan 2020
I really tossed up whether to go or not to Duck Island as there have been some negative reviews on the quality of snorkeling and the price of food and lounges on the island. I was very pleasantly surprised.I have snorkeled on a few islands and off Great Barrier and I felt it was very easy especially for those who have never done this. That you can just walk out is great for first timers ( better than trying the first time off a boat in the ocean for those of use not keen on deep water). I thought the coral if you went out to the buoys was good and a great variety of beautiful fish. Close to the shore the coral is dead from everyone standing on it (not suprisingly). Please try not to stand on the live coral further out people! We did not go for lunh just took a drink and sunblock. Took a towel and didn't hire a lounger. Having said that I would maybe next time I go My husband and I thought the food looked great and not expensive by Noumea standards. Food is more expensive in Noumea than some places but on Duck Island no dearer than on Noumea itself. As for the lounges and cabanas they looked lovely and if we had our family for the day we would absolutely get one. There is a lot of money tied up in supplying them and I don't see why it can't be like any other business and charge for their investment. Don't want one - don't hire! It's not like they are asking you to on arrival. Getting to the island is a breeze, Very fast and we didn't wait going or returning. Maybe we were lucky but I'm defintely going back. Love Noumea.
