We came to New Caledonia via cruise ship, so only had a single day.
Picked up tickets to Lyvai train tour at the cruise terminal and only short walk away near the hop on/off buses.

Train is good way to see the city and get lots of information about city/culture.
Warning if you sit-in front carriage you will get fuel smell when going uphills.

Train only does one stop at top of hill for photos/look-out and I could not see any toilets.

We had a pram that was left with staff at the start/end point of trip.

Only downside is we also had to purchase separate tickets for hop on/off bus and aquarium to use their bus services afterwards. I wish Lyvai would make a package deal as can get expensive for families. (Train $45 adult & $30 children >2. Bus+aquarium $45 adult & $30 children)
Aquarium doesn't open until 1pm, but Lyvai staff recommended baguette/pastry shop (Les Petits choux) across the road for lunch which was delicious.

Lyvai staff both train and buses very friendly and helpful.
NC people / public very friendly and enjoy waving and greeting us.

I am in a wheelchair and the buses I used had fantastic wheelchair access. This meant I could join the rest of the family on the hop on hop off bus.
Each and every driver helped me on with a smile. Claude one of our drivers went out of his way to make me welcome and made me feel due to my wheelchair that it was not a burden or slowed down the trip. Lyvai should be very proud of this disability service and their fantastic staff.
Thank you.

Carnival Spirit docked at the passenger terminal (not the one near Johnston Supermarket if you’re looking on Google Maps) but the other terminal which has a lot of freight containers, so a shuttle bus is required to transport passengers to the city. From the port, the bus ride is only about 5 minutes to the Maritime Quay/Cruise Ship Terminal centre in the city.

Here you’ll be greeted by various people from tour companies offering local tours. As I had done research prior to my cruise, I went looking for Lyvai Tours. You can pre-book on their website but I forgot to do so prior to leaving for my cruise and just ended up booking there in person. I booked the Hop-On Hop-Off plus Aquarium (Aquarium des Lagons Nouvelle Caledonie) and it was AU$76 for 2 adults. At the time of writing this review, the online Aquarium tickets which include HOHO bus is AU$36.32 for adults and in person it was AU$38. The guy was friendly and informative and they do ACCEPT AU$ with change also provided in AU$.

Directions were given to get to the HOHO bus at the end of the terminal and they were easy to find cos their buses say “Lyvai” on them and the staff can tell you’re looking for them by the green-coloured wristbands you’re given to wear. It is also these green wristbands you flash to the bus driver to get on. I’ve seen other people with different coloured wristbands trying to get on Lyvai and being told they’ve got the wrong bus.
Anyway, you’ll get a map of the bus route and the first thing we did was do a 3/4 loop from departure point to get an idea where each of the 7 stops are. After our 3/4 loop we got off at the last stop Melanesian Museum and crossed the road to our first stop, the Morning Market as it is only open 5am-12pm Tue-Sun.

After the markets, we got on the HOHO bus for stop one at Lemon Bay (there are two stops) and ended up walking along the beach promenade before catching the HOHO from stop two at Lemon Bay. We then got off at the Anse Vata/Duck Island stop and walked along Promenade Roger Laroque to Ouen Toro (we didn’t make it to the top, just the first lookout area where there’s a parking lot). Then off we walked back down to Promenade Roger Laroque and along the row of shops before visiting the Aquarium.

After our visit to the Aquarium, we caught the HOHO back to the Lyvai Tour’s pickup point in the city centre and walked to Coconut Square. Overall, the Lyvai staff that we interacted with were friendly and spoke English but as a visitor, I always try to at least greet with a “Bonjour” and say “Merci”.

Took the christmas tour. Nothing was organised to let a whole family together. Our kids where alone and separated from us! Train was full and no distance between people. Some didn't wear masks, and sanitary pass wasn't asked. Will nether do it again.

Good evening, and sorry for the late response to your comment, but the government of new caledonia had relaxed certain rules, you should know that we only operated over 3 days instead of the 12 days initially planned, we tried to please the children and parents, especially on this end-of-year holiday. We hope one day to see you again among us in better conditions. Lyvai Team

In Mid May my disabled wife and I along with our daughter went on another of the ubiquitous pacific cruises. usually we do not get off the ship as my wife is in a wheel chair and very few places either cater for, or make any attempt to be wheel chair friendly.
However, to our great surprise and despite having been to New Caledonia may times, this trip we could get off the ship. For two reasons. 1. Pacific arranged for a wheel chair taxi to takes us from the ship to the terminal (a considerable distance of about 10min in a taxi), and, 2. Lyvai tours has now purchased two wheel chair accessible buses for their hop-on-hop-off.
It was our good fortune to be the first users of this service. For those who have a walking disability, wheel chair bound, or just want to go for an inexpensive tour of Noumea then I highly recommend the Lyvai HoHo bus.
This service took us through town and out to the beach, allowed us to dine at a very expensive hamburger joint (another story), and have an enjoyable day in town.
Top service and a great facility provided by Lyvai. Shame others in more major locations do not follow their lead.

There are several companies apparently that come under the Tchou Tchou Train Banner, some are exclusive to the Cruise Ship Companies, others are private operators that you can book independently from the Cruise Ship Terminal.
As I rarely book ship tours, I discovered the Lyvai Tour company in the terminal, and they were offering combined Tchou Tchou train rides, plus unlimited time on the Hop On Hop Off Bus for $50 AUD. I only had to wait a short time, before being squeezed onto the rear carriage of the GREEN Lyvai Tours train. The journey around Noumea takes 1.5 hours, and visits the Notre Dame de Pacific Lookout, Faubourg Blanchet, Ouen Toro Lookout, Cote Blanche, Anse Vata Beach & Lemon Bay Beach. You also go through the Old & the New residential areas.
My tour Guide on the Green Tchou Tchou was "David", and he was brilliant at narrating the history of Noumea. Suggestions for tourists using any of the Tchou Tchou trains ..... try and sit in the front carriage, as the back carriage sways considerably during transit. Secondly, if you want to take photo's, make sure you sit on the very left side of the seat, as most of the attractions are on the left hand side.
This is a very informative tourist treat, and a must do for 1st timers in Noumea.

HOW TO SAVE A BUNDLE WHEN CHECKING THE PLACE

Fiscally conservative folk will be less than gruntled by the cost of cruise-liner sourced shore excursions in the south west Pacific. The good news when in Noumea is that LYVAI tours can offer the same excursions plus a bunch of others at considerable savings (the beans tell me 40-60%). This buys a few beers/cocktails back on board.

Hop on the free shuttle from the ship* 10 mins to Noumea’s nearby CRUISE TERMINAL – look for the dudes in the RED t-shirts: these are reps for LYVAI TRAVEL who will take you inside to the counter to peruse and book if you haven’t already done this online. There is a good variety of offerings: their GREEN TCHOU TCHOU TRAIN is popular; ditto the parallel city tour DOUBLE DECKER BUS: so is the HOP ON HOP OFF BUS; the DUCK ISLAND TOUR, not to mention the CULTURAL CENTER and the AQUARIUM. There are several others.
Latest visit we took in the GREEN TCHOU TCHOU** (I have a report on TRIPADVISOR’S separate TCHOU TCHOU page) – in the past we have done the HOP ON HOP OFF BUS** and the CULTURAL CENTER**. We found all excellent – comparative value pleasing, commentary first rate in good English, vehicles comfortable and itineraries not rushed and interesting. Service at the CRUISE TERMINAL counter efficient.

TIPS
- The major advantage of expensive ship-booked tours is that most leave from the pier which can be a boon to mobility-impaired cruisers.
- Although online booking offers discounts/convenience be aware that ships can change itineraries – not sure where that leaves you.
- Lyvai runs 10 hop-on hop off buses vs 2 from the opposition so you are less likely to have to wait long at stops.
- upstairs in the terminal is a market area with a whole bunch of local stalls offering clothing/food/entertainment/tourist-trinkets yada – a good place to explore even if you don’t buy.
- You can also go exploring near the terminal – there’s a bunch of sea-view restaurant/bars to the left and the city center with heaps of smart shops, cafes, restaurants and duty free places starts immediately inland. Note – prices may offend bean counters.
- the café at the CRUISE TERMINAL has WiFi. We have found it not very good. About 3 blocks in from the terminal is the city central COCONUT SQUARE (PLACE DE COCOTIERS)**, a big park area which has free WiFii. Sign-in is simple but takes a bit of time - the signal seems reliable.
- Most stores in the city close 1130-1430 for a kind of SIESTA. But few restaurants/cafes shut and not the market area upstairs in the cruise terminal. Sunday is not a good day to arrive – many city central retailers are shut. Some places like the Aquarium which are open all weekend chose to close on a Monday – but not to official tours FROM THE SHIP.
- Lyvai and most other outlets at the cruise terminal take Aussie dollars as do quite a few businesses around town (but not all!). Credit card acceptance seems almost universal.

* Smaller ships such as P+0’s PACIFIC JEWEL and HOLLAND-AMERICA’s MAASDAM etc can dock alongside the CRUISE TERMINAL but bigger ones must use the nearby deep water container terminal pier.
** TRIPADVISOR has separate review pages with info and pix on these.

While in Noumea recently on the cruise ship Voyager of the seas having not done a tour when last in Noumea and being very dissapointed in Noumea we decided this time to do the train tour that we had seen last time and heard so much about. we had also been telling other that we had been told others had enjoyed it. So after arriving at the tourist information centre we decided that we would head out on the 1 hour 20 min train ride around the island and hopefully get to see a bit more of Noumea. This turned out to be the best thing we could have done so with our train driver Stella and tour guide David (i hope I got your names correct) we headed out and about. I found David to be a great guide and with a mix of jokes and comedy thrown in amoungst some great information he made our trip so much more worthwhile and we saw more of the island I did not even know existed. It was great and I am sure there is plenty more we unfortunately did not get to see due to the short time we were in Noumea. I would certainly reccomend this tour to anyone wanting to have a good informative look around Noumea.

Thanks again to you all Ian

We took the Hop on Hop Off Bus on a recent cruise boat visit to Noumea. We found it to be efficient and well worth while. They say the buses run every 20 minutes but twice when we couldn’t get on a bus because of numbers we were told another bus would come along in a few minutes and it did. We had a very enjoyable visit to Noumea theanks to the Hop On Bus. what’s more because it was their anniversary (which one I don’t know we were only charges $5 aus.

Great tour, informative and interesting. Lovely guide and fun. Stop at Ouen Toro was on my Bucket List.
Extremely interesting to me as my late father was in the Australian Army Robin Force that erected the 2 canons in 1941 as a 19year old soldier. To my absolute amazement I discovered a large photo on a sign there, and there he was, 82 years ago, sitting on the canon with his mates! Could not believe my eyes. So moving and special. I have a similar photo that he had in his belongings so can even name his mates….
Dad spoke often of his time in New Caledonia and how he loved the people and his time there. He returned in 1977 for the unveiling of the plaque at the site.
Thank you Green Train for a wonderful experience.
