- RaymondaleKuala Lumpur, Malaysia1,147 contributionsresting places for emperors of Nguyen dynastyThere are seven royal tombs in Hue, but i just visited three of them on 5 September. that time, i had a one day trip. i visited tomb of Minh Mang first, and then tomb of Khai Dinh, the last one is Tu Duc. These tombs are representatives of Vietnam’s historical and architectural brilliance. they are serve as serene resting places for Vietnamese emperors in the feudal era. Exploring these tombs offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich heritage of Hue and its royal past. next time,i will visit another four of them.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 8 October 2023

Therefore it's famous for its Imperial Palace (built likewise the Beijing one) and Royal tombs and shrines scattered around the area. There're some 7 or 8 tomb sites, but the most famous and ornate is Khai Dinh Emperor tomb. Mostly, all tomb sites are in Hue southwest suburbs.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 4 February 2024

(other spots were a bit ruined, or else renovated). The interior decoration were stunning (and worthwhile to climb all the stairs afterall). - HuddersTHuddersfield, United Kingdom134 contributionsWell worth a visitWe bought a combination ticket when we visited to Imperial City and Citadel, so we arranged a driver through our hotel so we could visit a number of the tombs and also the Phuoc Duyen pagoda. We especially enjoyed Minh Mang’s tomb and Tu Duc’s tomb, which are set in large gardens, there’s a lot more to see than I had expected. If you’re in Hue then I highly recommend a trip round the tombs.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 April 2024

The 19th and 20th century imperial tombs near Hue were for the succession of puppet kings and emperors the French installed in those years of their "protectorate." Not France's proudest moment. Some are interesting, but none are interestingly old, not to mention ancient, nor of significant people.

Be prepared to climb if you want to get to the top where the tomb is. I counted the steps and if I didn't miscalculate...there were a total of 127 over three sets of stairs. Plenty to see between flights of stairs so time for resting! Very opulent tomb!

Lots of steps, and a large area to cover.
Beautiful architecture,and gardens.
But so melancholic, more than sad landscapes.
The shop offers a good range of books, stamps and coins.

We were doing the rounds in Hue as most tourists do and ended up seeing the Royal Tombs, which were nice to be honest.

We visited 3 tombs, each built with no regard to emptying the state treasury and exhausting the people. Ultimately such wanton behavior led to Vietnam's colonization.
The tombs are being restored, a good place to learn Vietnam's history.

Can you buy a multi ticket for the 3 tombs?
Written 6 September 2018
Yes, you can. We organised a 2 day tour with a private tour guide who was excellent - Ho Van Tam (otherwise known as Captain Tam as he has a dragon boat!) I am not allowed to give you his email address on this site. He got us a ticket for VND 360,000 to visit 4 tombs. We also went to the Royal Palace with him and did a trip on his dragon boat to visit some of the tombs on the Perfume River.
If you don't want to use him, I am sure that you can buy the multiple entry ticket easily when you are in Hue.

Can you please let me know which tombs would involve the least amount of walking?
Written 29 July 2018
They all involve quite a bit of walking & steps! I thought that Khai Dinh Tomb was the most spectacular but there were some steep steps at the entrance. After that there was little walking involved.

Is it better to visit the Royal Tombs by going along the Perfume River, or by taxi?
Written 13 November 2016
Yes,do river trip first, attractive setting and quicker to first tomb

I think of going to Tu Duc Tomb by bicycle. Is it accessible by land or I have to take a boat?
Written 4 March 2016
Hello,
Tu Duc’s tomb is 6kms from Hue and easily accessed by bicycle. It's very nice.

Hi all,
How long would you say a visit to Hue would take? Both the citadel and the tombs.
I would be arriving to Hue from Hoi An probably around 10 am. Would it be ok to visit during the day, maybe 4-5 hours, and then go (I would be heading to Phong Nha/ Son Trach) or is this just too short to see it ok?
Any advice would be welcome, thanks!
Written 27 February 2016
The Old City - could take a few hours. However, just depends how long you want to stay there. We did not take the Tuk Tuk when we arrived at Old City but We would recommend that you do. Just tell them that you only have a certain amount of time. Also depends on the heat. It was very hot when we visited so quite hard going walking around.
Hope that helps.

Which are the big four tombs along the Perfume River you (Adam W) mention in your Hue review? Thanks
Written 7 April 2015
We were at King Khai Dinh's tomb which was spectacularly decorated in the area where the king was buried. Impressive place. We also saw Khai Dinh's tomb which is much more serene, more of a beautiful park with an understated resting place for the park. You might spend an hour at the first tomb and perhaps 40 minutes at the later tomb. Have fun.
