Minh mang is the second king of Nguyen dynasty, so this is the place where he was buried. After walked through the gated area, i saw the double row of elephants, horses, and mandarins. i took some pics with them. after that,i walked to steele pavillion,i saw a stele called “Thanh Duc Than Cong”, there is a inscription on it, written by the king’s son, it is about the king biography, but the inscription not clear, very hard to read. after that,i walked through the Hien Duc Gate to see the Sung An Temple, it is the place where King Minh Mang and his wife are worshipped. after walked through Sung An temple, there is Minh Lau,the place for the emperor spirit to take a break before entering into the afterlife. Finally, i reached Buu Thanh. It is a burial area of King Minh Mang, but we could not enter, only royal family members have the key to get in once a year. before reach here ,have to walk across the “Smart and Justice” bridge leading through the semicircle lake- the symbol of the Moon. Buu Thanh is the symbol of the sun, which was considered as the center of the universe. i stopped here for a moment, and fell into deep thought of those glorious times ruled by Nguyen dynasty…Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 3 October 2023

It's great that the weather has stopped so we can enjoy the scenery here. extremely beautiful.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 9 October 2023
- houndy11Singapore, Singapore222 contributionsLarge complex of the 2nd emperorTomb of the 2nd emperor, his tomb is symmetrical so if you like things even will be nice. Lots of climbing thru different pavilions. Not as nice as others but wide with alot of water. As one of the more visited sites, we went late afternoon and had the whole place to ourself. So I suggest after 3pm or the last stop to avoid big groups.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 16 December 2023
- RichardSt. Albans, United Kingdom18 contributionsLovely grounds and interesting buildingsFirstly - thank you to the 'foreign tourist' who handed my wallet in today. Very kind gesture which typifies our time in Vietnam! As for the tomb it is a lovely setting with landscaped gardens, ponds and lakes making this a pleasant walk without all the history! The buildings are interesting to walk round leading eventually to the tomb. An hour well spent and so good I visited twice - albeit the second time to see if anyone had been kind enough to hand my wallet in. Cam on!Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 January 2024
- MoureenSt Ives, United Kingdom48 contributionsA great half day tripI only live two hours away from Hue, but don't visit the city enough. Friends recommend i visit Minh Mang's tomb, so I took a grab bike to the site and spent a wonderful morning exploring the tomb complex. The space is calming, the architecture interesting and the statues transfixing. I have visited other tombs while in Hue and enjiyed them all, but Minh Mangs is certainly one of the most spectacular.Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 10 February 2024
- HaebeeSingapore, Singapore852 contributionsInteresting king and beautiful parkThis mausoleum is set in a lovely park with water features and elegant buildings. It is a pleasant walk through beautiful gardens. You must engage a local guide dedicated to take you through this tourist site- we had a marvelous guide who told us all about this king and his plan for his tomb- it was most interesting and humourous too!Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 17 March 2024
- ElliottMelbourne, Australia2 contributionsWhere history and grandeur meetWe were struck by the grand scale and unique design of the Tomb of Minh Mang. The layout, with its temples, pavilions, and courtyards, represents a beautiful blend of architecture and nature. The ancient trees and serene lake add to the site's ambiance. We learned a great deal about the sacred rituals and symbolism incorporated into the tomb's design, offering a fascinating glimpse into Vietnamese history and culture.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 April 2024
- HeleneSingapore4 contributionsWhere architecture meets the afterlifeThe unique design, with its lakes, courtyards, and temples, almost felt like wandering through a hidden world. It's cool how all the elements have spiritual symbolism. The grand entrance with the statues and bridges sets the tone for the whole site. It's not just a tomb, it's definitely a whole experience.Visited June 2018Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 April 2024

From the moment you enter, you're surrounded by intricate carvings, stunning statues, and exquisitely painted buildings. We loved wandering the grounds, discovering hidden courtyards and marveling at the intricate balustrades. The blend of architecture, art, and nature was truly awe-inspiring. It's a little out of Hue's main center, but absolutely worth the trip for a glimpse into this emperor's legacy.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 April 2024

We spent one full afternoon going around to the tombs of Hue. This was one was very spread out with lots of beautiful areas to relax and explore. Definitely add this to your itinerary when you are in Hue. We used stop and go tours services for the tomb visits and Jack was an excellent driver and guide.

Both the mausoleum and the grounds themselves are well worth the visit as well as learning about the interesting history of the Nguyen dynasty. With 135 offspring from 800 concubines The Emperor obviously had a productive life. What is fascinating is that there were no civil wars among the siblings to ascend the throne .

This was the first of the three tombs that we visited with our private driver on our historical tour around Hue. Beautiful gardens and interesting buildings, you work your way from the entrance through to the final resting place. We didn’t hire an audio guide but felt there was sufficient explanation, in English, to satisfy us. Easy to spend a couple of hours here.

Very large complex with a beautiful man made lake with rivers or motes. The Emperor is buried here with hundreds of Concubines and the staff. Almost anyone that had daily contact work killed and buried on site so to keep the Emperors secrets secret. Many buildings for the theater and staff and the Queen and Concubines. Good for entire family. Not wheelchair friendly. Great gardens everywhere. Worth the trip and time.

Emperor #2 of the Nguyen Dynasty left us with these lovely, well manicured grounds and buildings all aligned to enjoy and of course pay him homage. Like some men of wealth and power he exercised this and his male privilege by having reportedly 33 wives and 107 concubines which may have been good for him but not for the women. I enjoyed the lakes created around the structures.

This is the most beautiful king tombs of Hue. It take us around 20 minutes from the city by the road along the river, not too far if you take a taxi. This architecture looks like a small citadel, you can walk and relax. Will recommend to anyone visiting Hue

Hi Roaieana, I suggest you stay 1 - 2 nite in Hue, it has many place to see such as royal tombs (Khai Dinh, Minh Mang, Tu Duc mausoleum), imperial city, Thanh Toan bridge & Thanh Thuy village or take a Dragon boat trip on Perfume river, or go to Thanh Tien village - making paper flower village.
Further more, I should go Hue via Hai Van pass - it's really nice

Hi Kelley! Thanks for the review. About how many hours would allot for all the places that you visited in your post? The reason why I ask is, I would be coming from Hoi An that morning, arriving in Hue at about 9 am or so.
Written 3 March 2016
I'd allow about 90 min of Minh Mang but a quick walk through could be done in under an hour

Hi I am currently in Hue with my family and the boat tour that includes tomb of Minh Mang sounds great. Which boat tour, can you remember the name? Thanks

Hola, Que tal.

We would like to visit the tombs around Hue without an official guide. Has anyone else done this and what was your experience? We are thinking of getting taxis and just reading up on the sights before we visits. We won't necessarily visit all the sights.
Written 16 July 2015
Hey, we did this by renting a scooter from our hotel for 100,000 dong. The alternative was a private car for 500,000 that would take you wherever you wanted to go and wait for you. We were told often that there are two main tombs to see Minh Mang and Kai Den (spelling horribly wrong I think) which will take up the best part of an afternoon if you are driving yourself. To find the tombs we used an app called maps.me, essentially it doesn't need wifi to work and uses gps to guide you like google maps. We just downloaded the Vietnam map before setting off. If you get to a tomb and suddenly wish to know more you can rent a guide there but tbh we enjoyed walking the grounds which were spectacular. If you have any more questions just let me know!

Is 1 day in Hue enough?
Our tour is suggesting a 1/2 day tour in Hue, then heading on a cruise down the Perfume River and on to Hoi An. This seems rushed to me.
Written 22 April 2015
An entire day is needed to do justice to this beautiful town. 2 days would be even better, if you can spare the time.
you can see all the tombs, do the citadel at a decent pace and eat in all those fab eateries around town
