- MizuhoKHino, Japan4,100 contributionsA monk drove from here to protest the warThis is a must visit in Hue not only for the beautiful pagoda standing by the river but also the point where a monk started his drive from here to protest against the Vietnam war. It was so heartbreaking to see the blue American car he drove but conveys very heavy message that the peace is precious. This place became one of the highlights of my trip. Each stair to the pagoda is huge, you need to step up with energy. The scenery is great to see the river and boats passing by.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 October 2023
- GuadalupeBronx, New York4 contributionsCaptivating atmosphere amidst picturesque sceneryAs we approached Thien Mu Pagoda, nestled on the banks of the Perfume River, an air of tranquility enveloped us. The pagoda's elegant architecture, blending seamlessly with the lush surroundings, created a captivating atmosphere that left us in awe. Upon entering the grounds, we were greeted by the iconic Phuoc Duyen Tower, its seven tiers reaching towards the sky, adorned with intricate carvings and Buddha statues. The tower's reflection shimmered in the nearby lotus ponds, adding to the serene ambiance. We strolled through the meticulously manicured gardens, admiring the vibrant bonsai trees and fragrant flowers that lined the pathways. The gentle breeze carried the soothing sounds of wind chimes, further enhancing the peaceful atmosphere.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 March 2024

- Dimitris LSydney, Australia50,924 contributionsA religious and cultural centre with a lot of history. The Thiên Mụ Pagoda (which means “Temple of the Celestial Lady”), was built in 1601 as a rather simple building, but was expanded in later years. It is a central point of Vietnamese culture and religion. It is a beautiful building with a very long history. In 1963 (during the Vietnam War years) there were many anti-government protests over the then South Vietnamese government policies, particularly its policies against Buddhists. Thien Mu Pagoda became a major organising point for the Buddhist movement. It also became the location of hunger strikes, barricades and protests against the government. On the grounds of the Pagoda is housed the Austin car that was driven by Thich Quang Duc, a Buddhist monk. He drove to the centre of Saigon (known today as Ho Chi Minh City) and set himself on fire in what was the first of a series of self-immolations by Buddhist monks, protesting against the government’s religious policies. In this way the plight of Buddhist followers was brought to the attention of the international community.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 June 2024
- busybeesbizSingapore, Singapore194 contributionsA place of serenity - a UNESCO siteYou can't quite climb up the pagoda but you get quite a peaceful stroll in the grounds. It is a working temple so monks get up at 3.30am to toll the bell. There is a timetable printed on the grounds to inform the visitor what the monks do and when. There is also a hall at which you have to remove your shoes to enter. Beautiful flowers and fruit trees adorn the grounds. Read up before you go. Like many tourist attractions in Hue, there is not much information at the sites.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 24 June 2024
- Yvonne S32 contributionsNice ride on the perfume river to get to the pagodaTook the dragoon boat on the perfume river to the Thien Mu Pagoda. The pagoda, at 33 ft high and dates to the 17th century. It was constructed by the emperor as a dedication to some of his historical family members. All around the Pagoda are various Stella with writings in stone. Immediately behind the pagoda is the Buddhist Temple that was constructed in 1844. The Temple is rather impressive with various monks walking around adjusting all the offerings. Behind the temple is some beautiful gardens and the living accommodations for the monks. We heard that shorts were not allowed in the temple, but we noticed many tourists in shorts. The only requirement is to remove your shoes before entering the temple.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 July 2024

The Thien Mu Pagoda was a highlight of our trip to Hue. It doesn’t have the opulence of the other palaces but the quiet serenity and the fact that it is currently lived in as opposed to ‘an attraction’ made it feel quite special. It is in lovely condition and has many beautiful areas that are serene and peaceful. The alter with fruit only as offerings felt less commercialised. There is no entry fee and you can have a prayer in front of the alter. The location is spectacular overlooking the river. Definayely worth a visit.

This was a nice trip on our journey through Hue. The Pagoda was built in 1601, and who's centerpiece is a 21 metre tall tower. When I was growing, I remember seeing a news clip of a man setting himself on fire as a protest. The car he used to get ther to do his protest, is here. Never did I expect, that I would actually end up here one day. What a tragic story.

This pagoda is a must see whilst you're in Hue, it's very historical as it's where a monk lived who has killed himself in protest which is very famous in the photographs of the event. The building itself its very beautiful, we were very fortunate that when we visited the monks were praying, so were got to witness this which was very interesting. Make sure when you visit you go via transportation, we walked, and there wasn't really a path there, so we had to walk along the road which was very difficult.

Please read up about this place before visiting; the near history is very touching.
We did the mistake is waking there from the market and as there is no path you end up walking on the street half of the time- not nice.
When leaving the Padoga we took a river boat for VND 200,000 only to find out they were not allowed to bring us back to the Floating Resturant. They had to drop us off on the grass bank; 1 km away - be aware

The Pagoda is iconic. It is a "must see". Nice view of the Perfume River. The most interesting thing for me here is the car used for the suicide. Sad but he is remembered. If you just walk through quickly, you will actually missed "Thien Mu". She is the deity that this Pagoda is named after. She is sitting on the second floor of the entrance facing inwards, so you need to look back to see her. She is wearing her trademark red and green dress.

The tranquil setting and intricate details of the pagoda are a sight to behold. It is a wonderful setting to experience the spiritual ambiance of the pagoda. The seven-storey tower is the tallest religious structure in the country, and its beauty is unparalleled. Inside, visitors can admire the intricate carvings and statues that adorn the walls. The gardens are also a sight to behold, with lush greenery and a tranquil atmosphere. The views of the river from the pagoda are breathtaking, and the whole experience is truly unforgettable.

hi , was it a private boat ? did you have time to go up the steps and visit the pagoda ? 2 hours altogether ?
We would like to go there end of afternoon . Hope our plane won't be delayed .
Thank you for answer .

bien Cordialement

Hi can you combine Thien my pagoda with Ming minh mausoleum on this hue perfume river... is there any more sites worth seeing along perfume river ?
Written 7 February 2017
Well, Hue is seen as a budha land, so you can find a lot places to go. Besides Thien Mu pagoda, you can go to Hue imperial Citadel, Huyen Khong Son Thuong or Minh Mang tomb or Tu Duc Tomb if you are interested in kings's history

Have a beautiful trip

Hi, I am thinking of visiting here as part of an organised trip. My friend is 72 and worried there are no handrails or assistance on and off the boats. I'm surprised it is described as difficult as it is a trip organised by Saga, so opinions welcomed please. Thank you in advance!
Written 26 April 2015
I would definitely give it a miss. It is not easy getting on and off the boats and not worth the risk of injury. There are some paved areas within the Pagoda gardens and other parts not. It can be difficult underfoot at times if your balance is not the greatest. There are many other sites in Vietnam much more interesting and much easier and safer to access. You would not want to be in hospital in Vietnam. It is a developing country. I work as a volunteer at the Hue College of Medicine & Pharmacy so have seen first hand the significant difference between their standard of care and that of the western world. Vietnam is a beautiful country with plenty of things to do and see so pick the safest options to have the most enjoyable experience possible.
