A precious historical relic in Hanoi to learn about the history and culture of Vietnam since 10th century. Love it!

Welcome to the "Temple of Literature" ("Van Miêu") and to the "Imperial Academy" ("Quóc Tù Giám")! The temple dates from 1070, was built during the reign of Emperor Lý Thánh Tông and dedicated to Confucius and famous scholars. The academy dates from 1076 and was the very first and largest university in Vietnam until 1779. Visit its pavilions, gates, courtyards, gardens, ponds and altars! The courtyards are numbered from one to five. The first two ("Dai Trung Môn" and "Khuê Vân Các") include gates and beautiful gardens. At the third courtyard ("Thien Quang"), a nice pond known as the "Well of Heavenly Clarity". The fourth couryard ("Dai Thàn Môn") houses the "Hall of Ceremonies" and the "Sanctuary to Confucious". Finally, at the fifth courtyard, the grounds of the "Imperial Academy" ("Quóc Tù Giám") and altars honoring famous professors (on the ground floor) and ancient kings (at the upper floor). Unmissable at any visit to Hanoi! Belore going, check visiting hours (as they may change seasonally) and dress properly for a temple. Enjoy!

We spent nearly two hours here looking around. This is Hanoi's first university and a wonderful example of Vietnamese architecture. Four or five courtyards, many buildings, museums, treasurers and shrines to explore.
