Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is actually a middle point of a wholesale local market. You will find everything here. This is not much of tourist buying but you will get the true essence of local people and their culture.
Another importance is this place connects thamel, dorbar hall and a way out to main city; all in 10/15 mins walking distance.
Try some local food here. Or just click your camera to capture the life style.

The Annapurna temple is beautiful and all around it are some very busy streets. I walked from Naya Bazaar to Asan to Durban Square to the Monkey temple and back and didn’t get lost at all. Prices are keen but as a dentist area I may wait until I get home

I spent a few months in kathmandu and didn't want to be based in thamel all the time because it's all just built and centred around tourists. i chose to live in Asan and think it's great. If you love bustling streets full of life and people and interesting things going on everywhere you look, you will love it too. It's a great area to shop and most of the stall holders will give you a fair price even if you're a tourist - unlike thamel. Come in the early evening for the vegetable market and for the most atmosphere. It's true that it's chaotic but that's part of the fun! I recommend coming on a dry day if possible because things do get a little muddy if it has rained. The streets that radiate off the market square are so interesting and you'll feel far from the tacky tourism of thamel - no one hassling you to buy stuff. If you're a photographer you could easily spend a whole day wandering and discovering.

Step away from the touristy area of Thamel and head your way to Asan Tol. My friend and I went during the morning and it was a beautiful experience just seeing how life is here for the locals doing their morning grocery run. If you love photography, this is the place to be. It's raw, it's got beautiful architecture and there are vibrant colours everywhere you look. Sure it ain't clean but it's Kathmandu, revel in it.

I am so glad we stumbled on the Asan Market before visiting Thamel.
The Asan market is like 'reading the book' and Thamel is like 'seeing the movie.' Everything in Thamel is geared towards taking your money as a tourist. You know a neighbourhood has completely sold out when you see bong shops, reggae cafes and Che Guevara knittings.
The nuances are small as both Asan and Thamel share similar traffic, pollution, and confusing layout. However, the Asan Market sells goods to locals and shop owners won't try to sell you a brand new flat screen TV.
And that is indeed the appeal!!! As a tourist, you may think you want 'genuine' singing bowls and thankgas but I assure you there is more authenticity in seeing a fridge carried on someone's back through a centuries old, twisting alley. That is day to day life of Kathmandu.

Asan alternative name Asan Tol is a ceremonial, market and residential square in central Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. It is one of the most well-known historical locations in the city and is famed for its bazaar, festival calendar and strategic location. Asan has been described as one of the fine Newar examples of a traditional Asian bazaar.
Asan straddles one of the two legendary India-Tibet trade routes that pass through Kathmandu. Because of this history, Asan has been one of the city's main marketplaces since ancient times.
Six streets converge on Asan giving the square a perpetual bustle. The bazaar at Asan attracts shoppers from all over Kathmandu because of the tremendous variety of merchandise sold here, ranging from foodstuffs, spices and textiles to electronics and bullion. Asan is also one of the popular tourist spots in the city because of its architectural sights and charming ambiance. There are banks, restaurants and a post office. Two taxi stands and bus stops are situated on the eastern side.

it is the perfect place if you want to have a local shopping experience. it is very busy and crowded but it is a very interesting place and the prices there cheaper than elsewhere.
i loved it because i could find what i wanted: Sari. it is an immense and a wild variety of sari and all fabrics, i bought sari in India and in Sri Lanka but here is cheaper and nicer.
while walking through, you'll smell strange smells but i really did not pay attention to these details because i was focusing on the variety of products and the artisanal stuff.
the price you are told, pay only 60% of it, you have to bargain
around, there are lot of coffee shops and restaurants

Asan is a local market selling all sorts ranging from fresh produce, herbs and spices to householdware and clothings. A fascinating place to visit and see how the locals trade and live in Kathmandu. The market is about 10 minutes walk from Thamel.

I had a simple kitchen in my room at Yala Peak,so asked around for food supplies. This is full on local market everything possible.
Lots of energy and stalls to browse.Street is narrow and traffic makes it difficult to relax,go early.A pleasant stroll, take the left, instead of right to Durbar square

When is the best time in the day to visit please?
Written 27 December 2017
I recommend you to visit early in morning, when other tourists are still taking breakfast. At that time, it is not yet very crowded.
