Poignant and beautiful
Jan 2019 • Friends
This well maintained cemetery is a unique memorial to the many Italians who helped develop Eritrea during their colonial period. It's a little oasis in the city. The vaults, statues and headstones are beautiful and well worth spending time among, exploring.

This is a war hero memorial. Some of them had lost their lives quite young. Upkeep could had been slightly better.

For travelers not for tourists
Aug 2016 • Couples
This is the site for travelers not for tourists. The cemetery (there is no just italian "section") shows the presence of various ethnic groups (italian, greek, jewish...) in eritrean past . The perfect place to understand the eritrean history. Do not avoid it !

Fascinating insight on the Italian colonial era
Nov 2015 • Friends
This is not a usual tourist site but the historic Italian cemetery is really a must for anyone who wants to understand the lasting importance of the Italian presence in East Africa. The tombstones and crypts are magnificent and the cemetery also contains numerous Italian war graves, which also provides a sense of the great sacrifices made by Italy to acquire and preserve this colony. The statues, many of which were carved in Eritrea, are remarkable.
