Enda Mariam - Asmara main coptic church
Dec 2014 • Friends
Enda Mariam Orthodox Cathedral is an interesting mixage of Italian and Eritrean architecture built on the area of the ancient church, on the project of the architect. E. Gallo in 1920, during the Italian occupation and dominates the city having been built on a hill.
At the entrance the believers are greeted by beautiful mosaics representing stylized christian figures and large horizontal stone beams in a clear Axumite traditional architecture. Peculiar and surprisingly melodious is the sound of the bells, that are made of four fake elephant broken tusks, when are stricken with a stick. The atmosphere of deep devotion that permeates this cathedral makes it even more fascinating.

From the entrance you can have an overlook of the symbols of the other two main religions: te bell tower of the Catholic Cathedral and the minaret of the Great Mosque.

It is possible to visit the inside only when opened for the liturgy. If you are in Asmara at end of November do not miss to assist to the celebration of Addei Mariam Ngdet (St Mary yearly celebration). Is done in this church and thousand of pilgrims witll gather here. A must!!

Again only viewed from outside but a nice photo opportunity and a prominent edifice in Asmara which boasts few taller structures. Worth a wee trip to see, we'd sadly no time to go in.
