About
The Nuuanu Pali State Wayside is a lookout above the Pali Highway tunnels where you’re treated to a panoramic view of Oahu's Windward side with sweeping views of Kaneohe, Kaneohe Bay and Kailua. It’s also well known for strong tradewinds, forming a natural wind tunnel of sorts. It was here in 1795 that Kamehameha The Great conquered the island of Oahu in one of the bloodiest battles in Hawaiian history. Led by Kalanikupule, the defenders of Oahu were driven back up into the valley where they were trapped above the cliff. More than 400 of Kalanikupule's soldiers were driven off the edge of the cliff to their deaths 1,000 feet below.

Windy
Oct 2021 • Couples
Very windy is an understatement ! The view was outstanding. Did I say it was windy!! Even though it was in the 80s down by the water the wind chill, did I say it was windy, was quite chilly! Well worth the stop.

My favorite spot on Oahu
Sep 2021
I remember coming here when I was a child on a family trip, so when I came back to Oahu as an adult, I knew I had to go! It's really a simple thing, just a parking lot (no entry fee, but pay for parking), and an overlook. But the view! And the blustery wind! It always brings a smile to my face. I could stay up there for hours!

Not Worth the Price of Parking
Aug 2021
We stopped her for 15 minutes - about as long as it takes to see and do everything there is. The view is nice and it is fun to feel the wind, but it is not worth the $7 we paid for parking. By the time I waited in line to pay the fee, my family was done and ready to get back in the car. If it were free, I would stay stop, but for $7 it is not worth it. Views and wind are free all over the island.

Windy but beautiful
Aug 2021 • Solo
This place has a nice view of the island. When I went to the parking space was limited and the weather was super windy but if you were still amazing. A short drive from both Honolulu and Kailua side. It is very easy to find.

Breathtaking
Aug 2021 • Couples
This was an amazing overlook and the plaques around with the history on it were a great addition. However, I do not agree that you need 1-2 hrs to visit this site. 30 mins to an hour and you will have taken all the pictures you can thank of. Then it’s time to get out of those high winds and probably rain or mist. 100% worth the visit though

Best view in Oahu
Jul 2021 • Couples
Best view on the island - and easy to drive up and see! Everyone visiting Oahu should stop and see this lookout. Really cool to read about the historic events that took place here as well. We went at 7 AM and were the first ones here. Parking is for all day so we came back again for sunset for a different view! I never get sick of this place!

Parking is $7
Jul 2021 • Couples
I've been here once 11 years ago so on this trip to O'ahu, I decided to take my husband since he had never been before. It's a nice lookout but parking will set you back $7 if you are not kama'aina (local). Kind of wish I had taken my sister's (the local) driver's license just so we could have parked for free! It's not that much in the grand scheme of things but you're really only up there for 15 to 20 minutes max to snap a few pictures. It's not somewhere you'd go hang out, especially since it's so windy up there.

Also, don't worry if the lot is full when you arrive. Like I said, people don't spend a lot of time up here, so somebody is always leaving. There’s also only one meter so if you get there at the wrong time, you could end up waiting quite a bit to pay. I also entered the wrong license plate number but luckily, the parking attendant said it was fine. I would have been annoyed if I had to pay again and end up paying $14 for this.

Bottom line - nice view but nothing jaw-dropping or spectacular. I mean you're in Hawaii - there are plenty of other/better views.

Worth a stop by

Really beautiful lookout a short drive from Honolulu. A must see when in the area. the panoramic view is amazing. Yes there was a plice car there and a fee to park there. but look at it as a small fee for a photo that will be amazing.

A neat view of Kailua and Kaneohe Bay
Jul 2021
A very scenic overlook. The gap in the ridgeline makes this a natural wind tunnel, so there are very strong winds.

Beautiful look out but now they added pay machines and cop to make sure you pay them. It’s sad that many of the attractions are being made just for profit.
