Get a new perspective on life under the sea with this adventure, which includes a clear kayak ride and a snorkeling trip. You'll head out to Makena Landing Park in Wailea, where you'll get to spot all sorts of local life, including coral and fish; if you're lucky, you might even see a sea turtle.

The snorkeling here is outstanding. Tons and tons of colorful fish and turtles. We spent five weeks in Hawaii and this was hands down one of the best snorkeling places (with two-step near Kona).

Very well hyped, the bay almost lives up to its billing. If the water was as clear as it is sometimes said to be, this place would make a trip to Maui worth it on its own. There are plenty of fish, and if you swim in the center of the bay, pretty far out there, the coral is large and colorful and magnificent...better than La Perouse. But I’ve been twice, and both times the water was almost murky, even way out in the center of the bay, where the snorkeling tour boats anchor. It is said to be clearest in the morning. Good luck.

Honolua Bay is a great place to snorkel! There is free parking just off the main road but it's hit and miss getting a spot because it's a popular spot. Getting here early is a good idea. From there, you walk through a beautiful and peaceful rainforest, which is the Honolua Bay access trail, to reach the bay. I had as much fun exploring the rainforest as I did at the bay. There are many chickens and baby chicks running around.

First, this is not a “beach”. Don’t bother visiting unless you’re going to snorkel. Parking was limited for us, but we still snagged a spot. The super short hike through the forest made it all worth it, even if we wouldn’t have saw any fish! Other reviewers hit the nail on the head by saying it reminds them of the Enchanted Forest in Avatar. Hopefully the water is calm and not murky when you go, like it was for us. We saw plenty of of sea life, which is great considering this area’s reef is dying off. Still, it’s one of the 3 best snorkeling locations in Maui. You will see more sea life on the left side of the bay.

My wife and I visited this location based on recommendations for snorkeling. As a “beach” that has almost 100 percent (mostly smooth) rocks and almost no sand, it’s not the most inviting to the eye. For snorkeling, it’s much of the same to start featuring cloudy water and a coral bottom. Based on a review on allaboutmaui.com, we ventured to the left (south) side of the bay for snorkeling and were rewarded with views of several green sea turtles and colorful fish among the coral. I would not suggest this site for first timer snorkelers given the current and how waves crash into the rocks on either side of the bay. However, I’m not an expert snorkeler and still managed to steer clear of any dangerous settings while still seeing plenty of action under the water. Once you park (look for porta-potties next to a few roadside spaces along the road), it’s a solid quarter-mile, non-paved flat walk to the beach.
