Recently we had the privilege of attending a concert by "Sister Shout", the local Waiheke a-capella choir.
This concert was themed “Global Housewarming” and the repertoire had been broken down into the elements of Water, Air, Earth and Fire.
What an amazing sound these women made with their multiple complex harmonies cleverly crafted with a mixture of familiar and not so familiar songs, each arranged by the Musical Director Kate Bell, Rose Treadwell and Rosemary Adler.
Wade in the Water, Make it Rain and Africa represented the Water section with clever percussive rain sound effects created with clicking fingers, sounding just like gentle rain, through to slapping thighs and thunderous stomping for those heavy downfalls. Their rendition of Africa was rich and transported you to the colour and sound of the African people.
Lets not forget the most beautiful rendition of Pokarekare Ana which brought tears of pride to the eyes.
Interspersed with the music were amusing little sketches pertinent to the ecology theme that added texture to the concert.
A big thank you ladies for your obvious hours of commitment to learning, practicing and presenting such an amazing concert. Those who missed this concert missed a treat and need to look out for the next opportunity to be transported to a musical feast.
