My wife and I visited Waiheke Island with high expectations for a beautiful day of bike riding and touring this beautiful island. Bikes and Barbers was the 1st bike shop we encountered off the ferry and we figured this was as good an option as any, wrong!
We rented 2 ebikes, opting for the less expensive bikes, which were older, but they assured us that they were in excellent condition and up to the task of taking us around the island. Wrong again.
Problems between the 2 bikes included; front brakes on one bike didn't work, derailer for the rear gear cluster on the same bike in poor condition and unreliable in shifting, especially up hills when you need it most. The control pad on the other bike not attached properly and when you went to use it to change power levels it was out of reach resulting in having to release your grip on handle bars to reach for it, very dangerous. Power levels fluctuated greatly going up and down hills, making it really difficult to maintain momentum. Ultimately the power failed on my wife's bike while going up a hill, which resulted in her taking a spill, fortunately she wasn't hurt, but we'd had enough.
We called to be picked up, which they did. When we explained what happened to the owner and asked for some consideration on the fee we paid, seeing how our day was ruined, the owner became defensive. He insisted that they maintained the highest standards and that every single bike was thoroughly checked out and maintained every night (there was an awful lot of bikes on their lot, so really?) Then he tried to blame us for the failure, pointing to a scuff mark on the end of the left handle bar grip, saying we damaged the bike. When I pointed out the fresh abrasions on my wife's right hand and forearm and made it clear that we weren't having any of that, he dropped it. Nice try though, blame the victim.
Extremely disappointing, I strongly recommend passing Bikes and Barbers bike rentals by.

Wanted to take 3 bikes out for the day, first bike had next to no front brake so asked for another one. Second bike had little air in the tyres, they put more in. Gears partially failed during the day, (it's a hilly island) when we got back to the bike shop they where not interested in a partial refund. We also hired an E bike which worked well.

We took the ferry over to Waiheke for the day & wanted to do a day of wine tasting & touring being the super fit (not) 50 something couple that we are, we decided that the hop on hop off was for the lazy crowd (us on any other day) so we rented e-bikes! Now Waiheke is one hilly, beautiful island, & we managed to make it up & down all of them with only one tiny boo boo. Awesome way to spend a day! Waiheke is a pretty idyllic place... we were told to just leave the bikes outside when we were done.... apparently the crime rate is pretty much less than zero
p.s.: they supply helmets & maps, the bikes have a little storage rack with a bungie to carry your wine purchases, you can't get lost, so don't cry like a baby when bike up a 10,000 foot hill, only to hit a dead end (ok, that was me, & I might be exaggerating )

Just had a shocking experience with theses guys, including the owner by phone. We waited over 30 minutes to be served, chose to pay extra for their “premium” bikes, finally got on the road and quickly realised mine was unridable due to gears slipping locking up. Limped back to exchange for another one. I asked whether they check their bikes before sending them out and was told yes absolutely (later the mechanic admitted no they’re too busy not possible). Another girl was head off and said her tire wasn’t pumped up! They put me on another completely different full suspension bike and the guy clearly looked nervous. We headed a long way out for a vineyard lunch and realised the crank was grinding badly up hills and top 3 gears hardly worked making loud grinding noise. We only had half day on the island so couldn’t waste anymore time messing around with changing bikes...and I don’t believe they had any other well maintained bikes anyway. So got back before heading to ferry to explain how bad the experience was...and that I was happy paying $80 for my wife’s bike but expect a refund for mine. They wouldn’t have it !!! When you hire a bike for $80 it should work properly...not only do these guys have no quality control, they’re not interested in putting things right when they go wrong.

These bicycles are a wonderful way of getting around Waheke.
-However-
One of our bicycles ran out of power at Ostend. We chose to continue riding back to the shop (pushing the juiceless one up the hills then riding it back down- a mega leg workout). Upon arrival at the shop, we explained the problem we had experienced and were told that it was highly unusual- especially as we had hired the bikes with the larger power pack. After a few minutes of discussion, we were then told that it was our fault, we had cycled too far and that there would be no refund. It was a really disappointing end to a fun afternoon. We had only cycled for 4 hours and stayed on the paths the shop had recommended. We are both fit people who often cycle so it wasn't due to underuse of our own leg power! They had told us that, with average use, the battery would last around the tarmac roads for 7 hours... not quite- my legs and back can testify to that this morning.
In summary, good fun and friendly staff but bad customer service when it comes to issues with the bikes.

so sorry to hear 1 bike ran out of juice.
But also perplexed as to why you would not inform us before the end of the day ? How could we possibly then help ? There is free wifi on the island, loads of cafes with free local calls. Ample opportunity to call us & to get a charged replacement battery.
I support my staff's decision in refusing your demand for compensation. One would not expect a refund after having finished a "bad wine "bottle. To consume is accepting the product in a way.
That same evening we eliminated the faulty charger so as not to have a 1/2 charged bike leave the shop again. Actually every night we go through the bikes, charge them and spray the helmets with naturals oils and against nits. We feel the fact that one bike travelled 70km without polluting, in silence is a feast of innovative engineering worth celebrating here on our little island. Think if all the travellers to waiheke choose a zero emission transport tool. No scooters, big busses, - no noise , just people talking and laughing.....

A fantastic way to see the island. The bikes were excellent and on seeing my son who is over six foot tall they gave him a different bike. The company make everything easy - from booking, to learning how to use the bikes, the advice on where to go and the help on return. They even looked after our suitcase for the day which was greatly appreciated as we could not have made use of the day otherwise. I was a bit nervous about some of the narrow roads but the other road users seem very used to all the bikers and were very polite.

My friends and I had a pretty lucky unlucky day in Waiheke Island. Darlene was awesome checking us in and getting us going with our electric bikes, so easy! 20 minutes into our ride around the island, my derailleur broke off and Greg came all the way out with a replacement bike! Then an hour later, weather conditions were less than ideal and we were on the other side of the island by then. My front tire slid out in a bit of mud and uneven pavement and I fell over into traffic. I ended up twisting my knee and Greg again came to the rescue after a phone call! He found us on the side of the road, drove me to urgent care, helped me track down the on-call doctor, and gave my friends and me a ride to the ferry to get back to Auckland. Greg and Darlene, THANK YOU.

We brought our bikes over to island, mine loaded with panniers, and wanted to stop in Oneroa and needed to find somewhere to park the bikes for a couple of hours. Asked in the bike shop and they were happy to look after them free of charge. Spent time chatting with the staff and admiring their really good range of hire bikes. As an experienced cyclist looks a great place to hire from and with their range of ebikes there is something to suit all abilities.

We had sort of booked in advance but not got confirmation (my fault) but the team were great and pulled bikes together for us.
Really nice way to see the island and go to places the buses don't.
We aren't fit, or very unfit, but I wouldnt fancy the hills that make up 90% of the island without the electrics. There is no point arriving at a nice vineyward a sweaty mess.
Pay the extra, get the ebike, book it well in advance and be sure to tell them if you are tall or short to get the bike you want.
The team are great.

How much to hire the ebike for the day and do you have availability for two on Tuesday, 20 March, 2018
Written 17 March 2018
Hi All ,
Obviously much to late answer. But its a question that needs answering for others too. Pure Pedal are hired @$40 day - and electric assist $60 day. That comes with breakdown cover - in the event of a puncture etc.
We supply maps - ideas, local info and anything to make yr day special.
You can see the full range on see-nz com and our new shop is just much closer to the ferry at 108 ocean view road.

Is it essential that we book ahead ( we are on the island tomorrow until Monday) or can we just turn up?

Hi ,
Well it's like this - if it's sunny and the birds sing and the sky is blue ...all our bikes are out the door more often than not. If you rock up before 11 we can usually give u a nice ride....but later hard to say - just txt 0220502233 and book / or ask . We allways have Pure Pedal available if we have rented out the fabulous e-velo, cheers

Hi there,
How hilly is the island. We'd prefer to hire non-electric bikes, depending on the hills
Thanks

Hello!
Waiheke island is quite hilly. I would definitely recommend an e-bike! But I have to say that we crossed almost half of the island. So maybe if you don't want to see as much as we did, you can only do the easier roads ;)

How much does it cost to hire a Ecycle for half a day? Are you located near where the ferry arrives from Auckland? We will be arriving on a cruise ship in October.

Hi there,
Our e-Velos roll out for $60 per day. We are open from 9am and you can keep the e-Velos until the sun goes down. Helmets, maps, local info and all-day support are included in that price point.
We are up in Oneroa village, about 1400m from the ferry terminal. Several options to reach us: walk (15mins), bus ($2 pp and 5mins), or depending how busy we are in store - we may also be able to come collect u.
Kia pai to ra! (=wishing u a gorgeous day)
Darleen:)
