Wine Tasting... bit of a disappointment
Jun 2021
Visited on Saturday afternoon we had a booking I had made in April. We were set up on a table for lunch, even though our booking was at 3pm.

Luckily we managed to get a table inside the cellar door although it was extremely busy and the noise made it difficult to understand the sommelier who was explaining the tasting.

Our sommelier was nice enough but lacked knowledge about where the wines came from and was desperate to go home.

I always expect an experience from cellar doors, especially ones as renowned as Man O' War, unfortunately this one was lacking and failed to impress.

A long drive to taste wine
May 2021
Man O'War Vineyards are a long drive from Matiatio, where the ferry from Auckland pulls in. Being at the other end of the island, one would expect some sort of hospitality for people who make the long and arduous trip. Most small wineries depend on cellar door sales for a large part of their income, which requires attentive service. This doesn't seem to have sunk in.

Anniversary Weekend for 6
May 2021 • Friends
First visit for two. As always,
well worth the drive.
The tasting guy knew his stuff, as they do.
We left with $600+ of wine.

Disappointed
Mar 2021 • Couples
No confirmation of booking - when arrived it was hard to find a staff manner to speak to about our booking. Was like a mass free for all - service was dreadful - couldn’t even order a second glass of wine let alone ask about wine tasting - they care more about bums on seats than the actual wine or experience, staff seem clueless - food was average - much better wineries to visit and enjoy!

Won’t Visit Again
Feb 2021 • Couples
We booked for a late Sunday lunch & were looking forward to a relaxing afternoon in this lovely location. Unfortunately that’s not how it went: on arrival I approached the bar area where I was completely ignored by 2 members of staff. One of them was helping herself to a drink which she finished and then proceeded to walk away, the second person made no eye contact nor acknowledged my presence. Finally a young man who had been taking payment from another customer checked our booking with a very surly colleague and showed us to a table.
There was no shortage of staff, at least 6 or 7 were floating around doing very little. In spite of this, over 15 minutes went by and no-one appeared to offer a drink or take our order. To be frank, Man O’ War is a pain in the neck to get to from the other end of the island over crappy unsealed roads. Having made the effort we were hoping for a nice experience, but ultimately it was a long way to go for a glass of water, which is all we ended up having before leaving, still unacknowledged after 20 minutes.
Service in New Zealand can be very hit and miss, but many well established places seem to think that they can get away with this kind of poor performance. In the current climate with local patronage becoming increasingly important, perhaps it is time Man O’ War had a think about who is keeping it afloat and put some effort into recruiting and training staff who might actually give a damn.

Very disappointing
Jan 2021 • Friends
The Rose was dreadful luckily the Pinot Gris was more palatable. The squid was average with no little salad just 12 pieces of squid. This place used to be amazing but prices have rocketed and atmosphere is not as pleasant as it used to be. Platters looked so disappointing we ordered squid. Looked like mass production with no care or service, not what kiwi tourism is looking for!

Best Winery on Waiheke
Dec 2020 • Couples
We had lunch here after exploring the East side of the Island. An unmade road both sides of the Bay so quite remote.
We did the wine tasting before lunch & that helped with our choices for food.

Started with the Salt & Pepper Squid, Roasted Veggies & finally the Chef Board of delicious Slow Cooked Lamb with tortillas. It all arrived virtually together so pace your orders.

Beautiful setting & lovely venue for a perfect lunch!

Food: NO Wine:YES
Dec 2020
Don't go there for food, go for wine and the scenery if you must.

Very average "boards" and chewy crusted pizza are all you'll get. It's like they don't even care.

Our service was very poor. We had to hunt for servers every step of the way.
Ironically, our first server didn't know whether they had bubbles or not. She recommended a Rose saying it is bubbly. When she came with a good old flat Rose, we said it's not bubbles. She goes "there're some bubbles in it". All we could do was laugh it off.
It's pathetic for a winery to have someone who has no clue about wine to serve their customers.

I have a proposition for this place. How about cook it yourself bbqs? Just supply the barbecues and we'll just pay for the meat and wine and the location.

Slow Service
Nov 2020
We were a group of 15 for lunch and ordered different platters and nibbles for the table. The food was good, the special fish of the day excellent. The service was a different matter, twice we had to get up to get more drinks, order more food and water. Empty platters were still on the table when we left. We certainly would have ordered more wine if someone bothered to come and check. Our table was right by the kitchen so it's not like we were hidden. Plenty and friendly staff but no one seemed to be in charge.
