About
Marlborough Sounds Adventure Co are based on the Picton waterfront, with a large base where sea kayaks and bikes can be hired from, and all our guided trips depart. Sara and Dave have owned the business for 24 years and their mature, experienced staff enjoy providing the best adventure activities possible every day. Our sea kayaking trips are designed to give you as much time as possible on the water. Sharing the special parts of the Sounds is what our guides love to do everyday or if hiring a sea kayak and exploring on your own is your preferred option, then we can help you do this safely and with quality equipment. Hire a mountain bike and ride all or part of the Queen Charlotte Track on one of our quality mountain bikes. Serviced daily, our bikes are set up for the rugged terrain of the track. Our walking package options are designed for both the independent and guided walker and ensure that your walk on the QCT is as hassle free and enjoyable as possible.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My fiancé and I had a brilliant half day guided kayaking tour with these guys, seeing the beautiful sounds from the water and spotting fish, stingrays, and 'banana pomegranate' fruits (really tasty). Our guide was brilliant, and the water quality is incredible. Even in the pouring rain I would 100% recommend.

I had a fabulous experience on the Queen Charlotte Sound Freedom Walk. The scenery was spectacular and the tracks well signposted and reasonable under foot. With long distances and some steep sections, I was glad to be carrying only a day pack. I enjoyed the cool temperatures of Spring and a more relaxed pace from spreading it over 6 days. Water taxi services were seamless and triple-share accommodation was very comfortable. Purchased meals and provided lunches were fresh and delicious.

We booked kayak tour which turned out to be just my wife and me and the guide. We both kayak regularly. They took us across the harbor and up the coast 5-6 miles where we met the van and kayak trailer to take us back to town. We saw several fur seals both in the water and on shore. There was some interesting geology along the shoreline. We stopped for a short snack and tea half way. It rained a little on us, but the kayak jacket and spray skirt kept us comfortable.

Our only complaint is that they gave us a double kayak, whereas we would have preferred 2 single kayaks. I think they adapt the trips based upon experience, and suspect we did a slightly more ambitious trip than usual because of our experience level.

Thank you for your review, we appreciate your comments. All our guided trips do travel in double sea kayaks because we know that you can get further quicker than if there are single kayaks in the group. We think people would prefer to maximise their time on the water, and this is definitely achievable if paddling in a double kayak.

I highly recommend using this company to hike the Queen Charlotte Track. They arranged everything from a boat from Picton to Ship Cove, hotels along the way (all very nice) and baggage transfers. They even supplied us all with trampers wool which really saved the day on the hike.

We chose to kayak all day on the Sound, which was gorgeous. Then the guide took all of us to a shoreline, and instructed us to stay along the shore until we came to Lochmara Lodge, while the rest returned to Picton. I had been very nervous about that part, but the guide stayed with us until I was completely at ease. Our luggage had been sent ahead by water taxi.

We came to beautiful Lochmara Lodge which has its own beach, restaurant and rooms, and even a zoo of local animals. In the morning, they gave us a packed lunch, and we sent our luggage back via water taxi. We hiked the Queen Charlotte Trail all day, and were picked up by another water taxi and brought back to Picton.

The company is extremely organized and very cognizant about making their customers feel at ease, even completely customizing their experiences. We saw several other customers picked up or dropped off in custom places to match their schedules. This is a great company for a great experience

Fabulous trip for our group of 8. We had a custom made week of adventure with 3 nights kayaking and camping in the outer sounds then 3 nights freedom hiking on the Queen Charlotte. Would highly recommend this combination. Great guide and equipment and wonderful flexibility with last minute changes to make the most of weather windows. Spectacular part of the world.

Awesome half day out with experienced guide. With the crystal clear water we were able to see two different types of star fish and a seal sunning himself. Lots of beautiful bays to see and picture postcard views of the sounds. Highly recommend. Don’t need shoes bare feet was fine.

Three of us did the freedom walk over five days and it was terrific. The scenery is just stunning, really quite extraordinary. The organisation was seamless, with ferries, bags, and accommodation all neatly orchestrated, so our bags were at our accom waiting for us. Most people take this approach, walking with just a day pack, but there were a few people with large rucksacks (I would have struggled).

Furneaux Lodge is beautifully situated with good food. Endeavour Hills Homestay was also excellent- Dave and Neroli were great hosts and made us a pizza dinner which was very welcome after the longest walking day. Again, a beautiful outlook and very comfortable.

The info we received before the walk was thorough and clear, and dealings with the office were easy. The company has a relaxed but professional approach, and were across all the relevant details.

One tip- in summer if your last day to Anakiwa is warm, put your swimmers and a pair of sandals in your day pack. It's a fair walk and a beautiful bay- a dip at the end would be nice.

And another tip- having a rest day part way through the walk (after the longest day) was well worthwhile.

We had a beautiful afternoon on the water with the lovely Georgia. I’ve kayaked in many places around the world and the Marlborough Sound is my favourite destination!
