Three of us did the freedom walk over five days and it was terrific. The scenery is just stunning, really quite extraordinary. The organisation was seamless, with ferries, bags, and accommodation all neatly orchestrated, so our bags were at our accom waiting for us. Most people take this approach, walking with just a day pack, but there were a few people with large rucksacks (I would have struggled).
Furneaux Lodge is beautifully situated with good food. Endeavour Hills Homestay was also excellent- Dave and Neroli were great hosts and made us a pizza dinner which was very welcome after the longest walking day. Again, a beautiful outlook and very comfortable.
The info we received before the walk was thorough and clear, and dealings with the office were easy. The company has a relaxed but professional approach, and were across all the relevant details.
One tip- in summer if your last day to Anakiwa is warm, put your swimmers and a pair of sandals in your day pack. It's a fair walk and a beautiful bay- a dip at the end would be nice.
And another tip- having a rest day part way through the walk (after the longest day) was well worthwhile.
