Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This small museum presents local history and specializes in the whaling industry. There are gruesome displays of whale hunting, dismemberment, and whale products paying homage to locals and their predecessors who benefitted from this industry. A video explains the mechanics and processes of the local whale processing factory. There is no intelligent commentary on this shameful industry. Nothing to be proud of here Picton.

Otherwise know as the Picton and whale museum. You can tithes place a wide berth. We looked round in less than ten mins. Really nothing of interest.

This museum is a six story treasure box built in1998. It combined the former National Museum and the National Art Gallery collections. You can take an elevator to visit the floors you are interested in. I learned so much while I was there!

The Worst museum and also the most expensive museum we have ever been to, it resembled a garage sale. The staff were also very rude.

We visited on a windy off-season afternoon and were captivated by the exhibits and stories about local inhabitants of Picton. If you are interested in personal stories and historical events in a small town, this is the place to go. Very small entrance fee and it is run and supported by volunteers who couldn't have been more helpful..

The space is not large but a lot of artifacts pack the space. There is a photography rule or two: The entire Maori exhibit has a zero photography rule. You can take photos of most other artifacts unless noted not to, but Not of any pictures or documentation of the artifacts. I had to pay strict attention because I'll shoot anything. It is worth a visit, there aren't many attractions in the actual downtown, we enjoyed it.

As a previous reviewer said, there aren't a lot of attractions to see in Picton especially when it's raining, but this is well worth an hour of your time. It appears to be run by enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers who are happy to answer questions. There are many exhibits of the old Picton Hospital. Well worth the $5 entry.

There are not too many attractions in Picton but the Heritage & Whaling Museum is well worth 30 minutes of your time - particularly, if you want to see a wide range of local artefacts.

Entrance fee is a very reasonable NZ$5 per adult and you'll be guaranteed a warm welcome. It also provides a pleasant spot to catch up on your e-mails if - like us - you happen to find yourself in Picton on a wet morning!

You'll learn about local history, original items in exhibits. Very good stuff, one of them actually worked with the equipment on display.

Some good insights into the early days of the whaling industry in the area, with friendly and informative staff. Loved the Orca skull!
