We decided to pop in Barry’s Bay Cheese on the way to see Shamarra Alpacas as they are right next to the Alpaca turn off.

True to form, Barry’s Bay Cheese does exactly that, cheese, so don’t get put off from the looks on the outside, the magic happens on the inside.

Upon entry to the factory shop, the cheeses are located on the left hand side, while the right has a selection of wines, crackers and other bits and pieces.

The main counter had 3 varieties of cheese to sample out of the vast amount they do, so it was a bit hard to make a choice, if they could have more available it would make for easier choice selection.

After browsing the cheeses, we decided to grab from the odd cuts, as they worked out a bit cheaper.

We got to see Canterbury Red being made in the factory via the windows next to the counter, really interesting to see.

If you like cheese, stop in and check it out, the small size packets make it easy for gifts or a picnic.

Stopped on way to Akaroa to buy some local cheeses.
Due to Covid L2 status only 5 people were allowed in the shop at once so there was a queue outside
Bought some yummy pepper cheese and others.
There is facility to sample about 5 different cheeses at the counter plus depending on timing you can see cheese being made out the back.
I would consider this just a shop as opposed as a thing to do.
Worth a 10 min stop en route to Akaroa if you want to support local.

Stopped here on the way to Akoroa. We were able to watch the cheese-maker at work and sample a small selection of cheeses. We purchased off-cuts as they were a bit cheaper. Took us a few weeks to get through the cheeses we bought - ideal for a snack with a box of biscuits when travelling. Cheeses were tasty too and well priced.

Called in for cheese tasting & that's what we did for as long as we liked & as much as we wanted as no one around to care!

Eventually a staff member walked through but he was off to his car. Then a lady came in, spoke maybe two words to us. We did buy some cheese but no staff cared either way.

I checked on the website before leaving Christchurch on the opening hours; it said 9 am so I got there in time. The banner outside said Open; the sign on the door said Open from 9. The shop was shut. I waited 15 minutes and it was still closed. So I then headed off with my substantial order for a special function to another Canterbury cheese factory. Will use them again instead of here.

Great place to stop and sample some of the best cheese New Zealand has to offer. A place to get great cheese bargains. Sadly covid restrictions meant not many tasting opportunities.

Not only can you view the cheese being made, you can taste it on site and purchase small pieces perfect for a holiday at home evening cheeseboard selection. Have now tried several varieties... Wow will be back here again and when I need I can order from the website.. Always looking for new ideas and suggestions... I suggested Havatti with walnuts (a Danish French type cheese) let us see if they make it... it would be yummy as they had locally grown sacks of walnuts for sale.. Also many different accompaniments for the cheeseboard. As we purchased some cheddar I also purchased some balsamic pickled onions.. Yummy

We stopped by for a visit while enroute to Akaroa. It was a delightful little boutique cheese shop. Lots of variety of locally made cheeses are available and we enjoyed the free cheese tasting as well. We could look through the glass window from the shop to view the factory where the cheese are made. We ended by an assortment of cheeses to take home. The do online orders as well. Highly recommend.

Great little place on the road from Christchurch to Akaroa. A great selection of cheeses made on site. There’s a viewing window to see the cheese made as well. A selection of 4 cheeses to taste, all were delicious. We bought 2 cheese blocks and crackers. The lovely assistant gave us a cold bag to keep the cheese cold while we were in Akaroa.

We stopped on the way to Akaroa to sample some cheese. I was a little disappointed with the selection of cheese available but I did buy some Masdaam cheese that I hadn't tried before and also some very nice cumin spice cheddar.

While nothing special at this shop, I would still visit again.
