Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

For such a small town, Akaroa has a wealth of attractions and the Powerhouse Gallery is one. Hidden down a side street it is run by volunteers & open nearly every day with ever changing exhibitions. The current Yin & Yang exhibition contrasts very different works by local artists.

Old power station turned into a community gallery attracting high quality exhibitions and occasional concerts. And right next to the art and the grand piano is the restored power generator. Charming juxtaposition. Well worth the very short walk to reach this place.

A hidden gem just up street from the main part of town. The docent was very knowledgeable about the artwork, very nice lady. The gallery just re-opened this spring after undergoing earthquake repairs. Check out the nikau cabbage tree in the back.

Pleasant little gallery with a range of different styles of local art. As other reviewers have said, worth popping into.

A pleasant gallery space with an interesting history of itself. The exhibition on at the time was interesting but they will change. See what's showing and decide. Very pleasant person on duty.

This is off the main Street but unfortunately was closed when I went to see it. It was rather difficult to find as off the beaten track

As others have commented, the original power generator is the main attraction here.- if you are so inclined.

Most of the gallery displays art works for sale. These are of variable quality. Of far more interest is the original power generator for the township. This has accompanying literature and a good book is available for purchase.
A hidden gem for those interested in this area.

This was the original power station of Akaroa which was commissioned in the early 1900's and was all but destroyed in the recent earthquakes. It has been fully restored and is now an art gallery as well. Well worth a visit. It is free.
