Fishermans Bay is located on a working farm overlooking the Pacific Ocean a short distance from the small town of Akaroa. Plantings are extensive and include NZ native plants, Rhodendrons & camellias as well as a herbaceous border. Parking is available on site.

We heard about this garden from a local in Akaroa. We were so pleased we visited - it was marvellous. An interesting mix of native NZ plants with many perennials in a garden perched on the cliffs above the Pacific Ocean. We enjoyed looking through the photos taken during its development. Excellent

A return visit after 5 years....amazing what has been added in that time. The owners are always in site and love to talk about what they are doing and what is planned! A real joy!

Came across the garden by chance and so glad we did. Incredible garden and clearly a labour of love. Amazing panoramic views of the surrounding bays and only 20 minutes from Akaroa.

If you're prepared to make the journey over a windy, unsealed road you'll be treated to a gracious welcome by Jill and Richard who have fashioned an amazing garden with extraordinary ocean views at the very end of the peninsular. Bonus points if you visit the seals in the bay below. Just stunning.

Akaroa where we spent four months a year is situated below on the coast so a drive into the hills is nice .
The area is well maintained and the view is great.

Visited Jill and her amazing garden just after a storm. She apologised about the mess but to me the garden was amazing. Due to the weather we had to have a smaller tour but what we saw was stunning would love to come back in summer when it's at it's best. Thanks for allowing us to visit a gem in such a rugged environment.

We got directions from akaroa petrol station and drove out there. Halfway the road turns to gravel with big potholes and a sign saying open next to another sign held open with a book saying open. So we drove for another 11kms on this horrible road and get the entrance and it says closed..
Maybe the owner should change both signs. We were in akaroa for 1 day and it was really sunny and warm
Recommend if you go here phone 1st as even on beautiful days they may possibly be closed

I'm very sorry you chose to visit our garden while it was closed. The signs are clear wooden signs both of which have said Closed for at least 6 weeks. The sign at the top of the hill is designed to let people know we are closed before driving down to our garden. I do not understand your reference to a book on our sign as a book up there wouldn't last five minutes in our windy hills. Our website says we are open by appointment as we try to make sure it is a suitable time to visit our private garden and to make sure the weather and road conditions are favourable. Usually we say to people to not visit in Winter as there can be snow on the road and while the native garden is interesting year round the perennial plantings are at their seasonal worst. It is true that phoning first is best as we ask on our website. We cannot be responsible for weather differences between here and Akaroa as they do differ sometimes to our advantage sometimes to Akaroa. I don't see how we can change our signs as they are wooden to fit in with other local signs and clearly say we are either open or closed. It is upsetting to be judged at a time when we were clearly closed.
