Reached Akaroa late due to the earthquake last November but Kevin (I hope I get his name right) waited for us patiently and drove us up to the habitat. On the way through the hills and mountain telling us stories abt the country, the people, the animals, the trees and flowers. We got a lot of information from him. And he... More

We had a fabulous time with our guide Avril who looked after us both superbly well. She was very knowledgeable and passionate about preserving the wildlife in the Akaroa area. Down at her uncle and aunts farm we were made welcome guests and shown how much they have done and are continuing to do for the penguins and the natural... More

Went on the quick afternoon tour of Flea Bay - had a few stops on the way to take some pictures, then when we got to the bay we fed sheep, watched some chicks getting fed/nest boxes being checked, then to finish off saw some seals chilling by the sea :) Well worth the trip.

We were very lucky to strike a fabulously still morning when commencing Day 2 of the BP Track so seized the opportunity to kayak with Murray. As it is past penguin season we were not disappointed to see only one solitary penguin - the cute fur seal pups more than made up for the lack of penguins. We also spotted... More

Hi there, Thank you very much for your nice comments on TripAdvisor and understanding of wildlife behavior. I trust the rest of the walk was as enjoyable. It is a stunning walk on top the cliffs looking at the endless Pacific ocean. Thank you kindly, Kevin. More

My husband and I decided to visit the town of Akaroa, as a daytrip from Christchurch. Though it was not part of our original plan (we were hoping to visit Kiakoura, but road closures made that impossible) - we are so happy we chose to see Akaroa and do the Pohatu penguin nature tour! It is clear from the drive... More

We did the half-day kayaking tour of Flea Bay. Early morning start, 4WD transfer over the hills from Akaroa to the Bay. Our guide, Kevin, was brilliant. He looked after everyone in the group (maybe 15-18 people with children through to people in their 60s), gave basic instruction on paddling (kayaks were all doubles), and was very sensitive to the... We did the Pohatu Penguin Package, with lodging for one night, penguin tour, and kayaking. Event though we came outside of the regular penguin season, Sherine and Francis gave us a wonderful tour of the area and we even managed to find a few late moulting penguins! The cabin that we were lodged in was beyond our expectations. Running water,... More

Loved this experience. Collected by Joey and taken to her parent's farm on Flea Bay. They and the other farmers around are trapping predators (stoats, weasels, possums etc) to create a safe environment for the penguin colony. We saw sick and orphaned penguins being cared for, we checked the (artificial) nests to see that moulting penguins were OK and watching... More

Hello, Thank you very kindly for your nice comments. We are indeed able to get up close to some penguins because of a lot of conservation work that has been done by local landowners: Shireen and Francis Helps (Joey's parents). Rehabilitation, nesting sites, predator control... everything is all part of the work that has been going on for the last... More
