We were thoroughly impressed with this tour! We were treated to more than what was described.
The guide brought us to spots with amazing views of the town and bay. We went to the top of the caldera, 700m high.
Then we were brought to the conservation area, we actually werent aware that we were going to be able to see penguins that close. We observed multiple nesting boxes with penguins and chicks. The guide was knowledgeable and patient explaining to our children. There were also very tame and friendly black-nosed sheep that we were able to feed and pet.
We were also lucky to be able to see a few fur seals lounging around. And smell them too!
We learnt about the reforestation efforts in Akaroa, and the landscape history of NZ. The invasive animals and plants that are harmful to NZ’s trees and penguins.
All in all, an enjoyable experience! 10/10 would recommend.

The tour was absolutely amazing. A must do and would totally do again. The area is gorgeous, the tour guide Joey was so informative and personable, and the penguins were absolutely adorable.

I love the effort the team is putting in to save this little Penguin. A little disappointed in the number we saw (6 in total) - but happy our ticket price was going to help save them. Keep up the great work. The staff were very knowledgeable.

Fantastic experience highly recommend was good to do the 1.5-2 hour walk it was all down hill so a little taxing on the knees but the scenery and wildlife were brilliant kinda glad the longer walk was unavailable. The facilities are awesome nice to go off grid. The guides were very knowledgeable, penguins were very cute. Kayak was great to see the fur seals. Thanks!

Had an amazing overnight stay in Penguin Cottage with a evening Penguin tour, followed by kayaking the following morning.
Firstly we had a great ride to the summit with a very informative natural history commentary from Meg. We saw stunning scenery on the walk down to Flea Bay, with numerous waterfalls and a plthora of sheep, cows and various birds. The tour started with bottle feeding an adorable trio of lambs, followed by a detailed history of the Penguin project (amazing work!), and a look inside some nest boxes with Joy. It finished with watching Penguin rafts on the water, from a hide, with several even coming ashore. The kayaking was awesome fun - we saw seals, Penguins, many birds and even Hector's dolphins. A stunning adventure all around - not to be missed when in the area.

This was an amazing experience. We had a very scenic drive up and over the mountain to the bay on the other side. We saw lots of lambs and calves as it was spring there. The penguin viewing of the nesting boxes and then as they swam up the bay back to shore was great with the provided binoculars and a spotting scope. A once-in-a-lifetime experience!

My husband, son (10), and I stayed with the Pohatu Penguins in late September. We did the overnight 24-hour Farmstay, and it was one of the best experiences of my life. We stayed in the Penguin Cottage and paid the extra for the kayaking. If you only have one take away from my review - please let it be this: DO THE KAYAKING. I have never ocean kayaked before and I have only lake kayaked a couple of times. I had me and my 10 yr old in our two-seater kayak, and it was really hard, but it was really worth it. Also - let me say - I am not "fit," and I was able to handle the rough-ish water. There was a storm coming, so the water was not placid, but it was not at all dangerous. Our guide, Vila, is made out of magic. She is very practical and determined to be safe before you hit the water, so don't let that make you think she's rude. She is not. She's awesome. She just wants to make sure we all have a fun and safe experience. After suiting up and a quick on shore lesson in kayaking, we hit the water. We saw so many penguins "rafting" in the bay. It was amazing. We also saw fur seals and their pups.
The evening hike with Joey was amazing. We learned so much and got to be up close to the penguins in their little houses. We also got to see burrows in the hillside. It was amazing.
Go!

The Pohatu package was one of our favorite experiences in New Zealand! We loved our guides Meg and Ben. They're full of knowledge and you can tell they truly care about their guests having the best experience while being mindful of the wildlife.
We started the trip with the 3 hour hike to the farm. This was amazing, like walking through scenes from The Hobbit, Jurassic Park and the Sound of Music. Fair warning, it's a bit tough and wet at times with narrow clearances, so make sure you wear good hiking boots!
We had the opportunity to feed some baby lambs, see some penguin chicks and kayak with fur seals! It was such so much fun and we absolutely would recommend this!

In June our tour left at 3.15pm. I imagine that in November (summer & daylight saving) it will leave about an hour later.

I will be coming on feb 21 around 10am via an excursion booked through celebrity cruises. What penguin species will I be able to see? I was hoping to see the white flippered penguins. is that possible?

Hi there, thank you for your message and interest in our colony. The penguins we have in the bay are the White flippered penguins for sure! The white flippered penguins are a variant of the blue penguins and they all belong to the same specie "australasian little penguin", the smallest in the world!! Here at Pohatu we have the biggest colony of little penguins on the mainland of NZ. They are found only in Canterbury area (region). Please note that at the time of your visit it will be near the end of the moult season so we should still have adults moulting in their nest on the land. Part of the colony will be already gone at sea. Looking forward to your visit!! Also please make sure you book in advance to secure a spot on one of our tours... Kindly, Geraldine & team

Is a tour required to see the penguins? We arrive at Christchurch in late-afternoon, not sure if we can make it in time for the night tour.

They are really helpful, do email them if they can arrange something for you. It’s their private property where they help look after the penguins.

We will be pulling into the port at Akaroa on December 7th onboard the Norwegian Jewel. Are there any tours or shuttles available from the port to the Pohatu Penguin Habitat? If so, how do we go about booking a tour or getting transportation to the habitat? Thank you.

Hi there,
Yes there is , We pick people up from the Akaroa main wharf on cruise ship days here, the tour starts from there with a scenic Drive over to pohatu penguin habitat, We have 2 land based tour options the 2 hour nature tour or the longer version (same place) 4 hour nature tour- we see more scenery and do more walking on this one. Both visit our funny sheep and get to see penguins up close as we monitor the nesting boxes, taking in the beautiful scenery of the outer coast of Banks peninsula.
Note; March is the only month penguins are likely not around.
We also have a Sea kayaking trip, with the scenic drive from the main wharf on cruise ship days.
Hope that's helpful.
Thanks kindly

Est ce que l'observation de pingouins fin mois d'août peut être la bonne période ?
Kevin P
Akaroa, New Zealand1 contribution
Bonjour.
Cordialement.
Kevin.

Hi ! For the sea kayak tour, how do we stay on the kayak ? Could we swim with dolphins if they come close to the kayak ?
How long is the entire tour ?
Could we see pingouins actually ? in water
Thank you for your answers !

Hi there, The 12 midday kayak tour is 4 hours total, We spend an average of one and a half hours on the water. Depending on sea conditions on the day and how comfortable everybody feels.
The tour starts with the scenic 4WD in our minibus over the hills to Pohatu Marine reserve.
Dolphins and Penguins and our seal colony are frequently scene as well and many different native coastal sea birds , But wildlife does what it wants and we have a wild life code we live by as not to disrupt their natural behavior. We are Doc Smart operators.
We don't do swimming with the dolphins, we just watch them from the kayaks when they choose to come close. Which is usually a pretty cool experience. Same with the penguins sometimes they are in the water and sometime sitting around on the rocks.
There are specific tours from the harbor cruises in Akaroa that run swimming with the dolphins tours, if you want to get in the water with them they provide very thick wet suits. I suggest when choosing a swimming with the dolphins activity to choose a DOC Smart operator, as this is a qualification given to operators that have done a course with the Department of conservation and commit to their activities having minimal disturbance on marine mammal behavior.
Hope that's helpful,
Thanks kindly

What company did you use and what companies have Pohatu day tour starting from and with return to Christchurch?
Can this also include Harbor nature cruise?

Hi there,
Sorry we don't do pick ups from Christchurch, But the French connection Shuttle works well with all Pohatu penguin day tours. They get you to Akaroa around 10am-10.30am and depart around 4pm , it gives us time to get you back to your bus. It also fits in well with the harbor cruise tours on Akaroa harbor.
But I think if you wanted to do two tours in the same day, our tour and the harbor cruise you would need to be here early morning and late afternoon, there are taxi company's that can take you from Christchurch, or you could hire a car.
Hope that's helpful.
Thanks kindly
Averil.

Is there a possibility of actually touching the penguins? Tks!
Pohatu_penguins
Akaroa, New Zealand3 contributions
Hi there, Thanks for your question,
Sometimes we have penguins in Rehabilitation and Shireen or one of the guides will feed these penguins in front of you, Shireen only touches these penguins to feed them, we never cuddle or pet them because we want them to go back into the wild and not imprint on us.
You can see penguins up close on our tours in the nesting sites it's a very controlled manner we get to do this, only when we are monitoring with a guide we just have a quick look to see how they are doing, no touching, I know they are really cute and the chicks are really fluffy and it's hard to resist , But it's better for the penguins if we don't touch them unless we have to for an emergency situation. Mostly because we don't want to stress these birds out. It could be very harmful.
And also penguins have very sharp beaks and it's not something pleasant to be attacked with, they are aggressive little birds when they feel threatened , even the times we have had to rescue penguins in the past have left permanent scars on a few of the guides . But all penguins have different personality's so I can't judge them all.
All and all it's better for penguins if us humans don't touch them or get to close to them in the wild, they have to live their lives and we don't want to make it harder for the little guys.
Thanks So much for your question, it's one we get asked quiet a bit when on the tours.
You can cuddle our pet sheep though... They love a good scratch under the chin.

Hi, We are visiting Akaroa for the day this week & want to visit the Penguin colony.
Do you have to do a tour? I'm not sure we would have time

Hello and thank you for your interest. We are not running the Evening Penguin tours at the moment because it is the end of the breeding season and not many penguins are coming a shore but there are still a number of penguins still on land in the nesting sites going through the moult.
We run several day tour which you can found out about through our web site.
These tours are educational and research based, where you will join a research team and actively participate in protection work by monitoring nest sites and collecting data.
Thanks again and we are looking forward to hearing from you.
