About
If you’ve ever dreamed of escaping to a place of warm hugs and postcard-perfect surroundings, welcome. A Shamarra Alpacas Farm Tour is an unparalleled opportunity to get up close and personal with alpacas, learn about this loving animal, and create some memories with friends and family in a stunning location. You’ll find your new furry friends here in a beautiful harbour on the slopes of an extinct volcano and overlooked by craggy volcanic hills. Shamarra Alpacas is just over an hour’s drive (73km) from Christchurch Central, and only a 20 minute trip from the historic seaside village of Akaroa, which is worth visiting for its culture and architecture alone. Our panoramic views of Akaroa harbour and the rolling hills and peaks of the surrounding valleys are breath-taking, and will make every one of your selfies with an alpaca post-worthy. We are open year round, with the scenery changing beautifully through each season and the alpacas staying cute throughout.

The drive from Christchurch is about 1h20min. The ticket is 55USD regardless if you buy it online or on the spot, the difference is only to book your spot as it might get busy. There are 3 timings per day.
You get to spend about an hour with alpacas, feed them, pet them, took pictures. There is coffee/tea/water and homemade buiscits after the experience.
Very nice day spent, I would recommend to everyone who loves animals and beautiful sceneries.

Booked this tour as a last-minute addition to our plans and I am SO GLAD we did. We ended up being the only ones booked so had a private tour and plenty of time with the sweet animals. We even got to see a new arrival that had just been born that morning! Would absolutely recommend if you are in the area!

Even though it’s only an hour, you get maximum quality time with the alpacas. The staff are friendly and can’t wait to share their knowledge with you. Cuddling takes timing and patience, but when you finally get to hug one of these fluffy guys, it’s the best feeling. Would go again. FYI: don’t worry if you can’t get your vehicle up the steep road. Leave it in the turnaround at the bottom and they’ll shuttle you up.

This is experience was as beautiful as the photos I saw online that got us to book this tour! The Alpaca Farm was huge with the cutest, softest, friendliest Alpacas. We absolutely enjoyed our tour as it was informative yet didn’t feel so scripted
we were able to really spend quality time with the alpacas and had plenty of opportunities for photos!!! The view was stunning overlooking the other mountains. Lastly, the tourguides I and Lydia were so nice and really made sure the Alpacas were happy, comfortable and took care of the people at the same time. It was very obvious how mich they know the alpacas individually and how much passion they have for them

I 100% recommend this tour and it was worth it to drive to Akaroa for this one of a kind experience. The highlight of our chch trip!

Awesome experience! Their last tour is 4pm and we arrived 10minutes late but they still accommodated us and let us join the last tour. The staff, Lydia and Chen are both great! Gave us a lot of facts about alpacas and interacted with us from start to finish. It also seems like all the alpacas are well taken care of.

We went on a wet winters day, so the Alpaccas were not as cuddly and fluffy as we would have liked. But they were still very cute and interesting! Highly recommended.
