Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Kaikoura-Acaroa, is a French town 80 km from Christchurch. The architecture here is a continuation of the romantic French style, elegant and quiet. .....
After booking a bed and breakfast, I usually communicate with the landlord by email. The landlord told me that the gravel road to her house was steep and easy to slip on rainy days. Considering the safety problem, the landlord offered to share their own house with us, and everything went well.
Our car snaked its way along the winding mountain road, following the directions of the navigation. The scenery along the way to and from the Hinewai Reserve is very beautiful, fog filled, gave birth to many landscapes, like a mirage, like thousands of troops, in short, beautiful in your mind. When we reached the top of the mountain, we began to feel happy that we were almost there. However, it did not; Navigation led us down the mountain, over the mountains, we seem to have come to the forest. Day, under a light rain, there is no car around, no one, our hearts are playing a small drum, but everyone did not say their own uneasy. Road, not bumpy, but ups and downs. ...pitch, king beam jurisdictionon cripp the editorial.
Looking around, the eyes are full of cattle and sheep, and the fields are green. After all, they are the best place to absorb oxygen and lung, and absorb the essence of heaven and earth. I was in the heart of the desert, this beef and mutton quality must be strong and delicious, after all, they are in the best place to absorb oxygen, lung washing, and absorb the essence of heaven and earth.
The temperature in the mountain is low, and we all feel the cold.

The day started where we planned on one of the shorter walks, however, the lady in the I centre suggested this walk. At the end of the day it was a total of 14Km, 610m altitude and 4 and a 1/2 hours. We are both in our early to mid 60's and exercise daily, running, swimming and walking a lot, so are very fit. This walk took both of us to our absolute limit. The walk starts off at the end of town and works its way up to the Heritage park. From there it drops a little before striking upwards and seems to go on forever. The other side of the summit there is a picnic spot with toilet. From here it climbs back up and then works its way down to town. The reward is one of the most exhilarating views ever plus a sense of achievement.

We jumped off the cruise ship in Akaroa and decided to grab a lunch at the French bakery and hike up the Purple Peak Track. At the intersection with the Peak Summit Track we were already tired, but decided to continue up to the Peak Summit. I am so glad we did. We had a small lunch at the summit and then continued on toward Stoney Bay passing the Paruru Aratara Tara Track Shelter, ultimately coming back into Akaroa via the Stoney Bay Road. It was an amazing hike with great views, flowers and trails.

Spent 3 hours walking the various tracks, and it soon became obvious how devoted the owners are to environmental protection. We were happy to be educated about the various plants and how to encourage them, and how “humanoids” with their cars can do so much damage. The Beech trees are awesome; and the 600 year old Totara.

An absolute must-visit for locals and tourists. Such a beautiful, well-kept piece of New Zealand natural forest with hours of walks (short or long, you can choose how long you want to spend) Lovely waterfalls and native bird life to see as well. We spent 4 1/2 hours walking and have plenty to see still, so we will be back for more visits. The track was mostly easy with just a few hairy bits where there had been slips and work was still taking place but you just had to take your time & it was fine.
Hats off to the caretaker(s) of Hinewai, you have and are doing a brilliant job! Thank you for this treasure :)

We took the valley track from the lower car park to Hinewai Falls. Very easy track, we’ll maintained and signposted. As soon as you start the track you're following the creek gently uphill, many fantails and bellbirds. A really nice way to spend a couple of hours. We’ll be back to do the round trip track next time.

This is a walkers paradise. The reserve can be accessed fro two car-parks, an upper car-park and a lower car-park. As with most of Akaroa, the walks are often quite steep in places, so take a water bottle. There are several nice walks to waterfalls etc that take between one to 3 hours. A nice easy walk is accessed from the lower car-park. From here there is an easy 20 minute walk down to the bay at the bottom of the reserve. It is a nice, peaceful bay, take your swimming togs if it is a hot day, you will probably have the beach to yourself. If you like beautiful native bush, native birds, waterfalls etc, this is the place for you.

We had a brief but lovely walk in the hienwai reserve. The tracks are really well maintained but quite steep. The scenery is stunning. Allow for several hours of walking once you get there.

It's 15 years since we last visited, and it is great to see the progress that has been made in restoring native bush. Stunning scenery, bird song everywhere. So we got lost and walked twice as far as intended, but it was worth it.

If you are completing the Banks Peninsula Track then day four you walk through the Hinewai Reserve. Or the Hinewai Reseve is easily accessed from Akaroa. This is a great place to walk for a day and listen to the bird song. Fabulous

We will be arriving in Akaroa on Wednesday, Feb 21 on a cruise. We would like to know if there are maps provided to hike Hinewai Reserve. Please also provide instructions on how to reach the reserve from the cruise terminal.
Thanks,
Peggy

Hi,
We are in Akaroa from 8am to 6pm for a day on a cruise ship in early January.
We would love to walk at Hinewai but are going kayaking from 12pm and are told by staff at isite that a couple of hours is not long enough.
Do you agree?

We are arriving at Akaroa via a cruise ship on February 29th, 2016. Is it possible to hike from the Akaroa town center to the Hinewai Reserve and not miss our ship's departure? Any additional information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

How do I get to Hinewai from the cruise ship pier? Is there car rental or a taxi that will take me there and then I can walk back.
Written 1 March 2015
Definately will be ask the cruise ship. It is not far from Akaroa in a car, though to make the most you will want to walk some of it. perhaps they could drop you at one of the top entrances, and pick you up at the bottom.
