- Deanosaur89Edmonton, Canada9,226 contributionsNice Town Hall Square with lots to seeThe Town Hall Square has a Town Hall on one side and the House of the Blackheads on the other. There is a marker where the first Christmas Tree was placed here in 1510 and they put a Christmas tree here each year. The House of the Blackheads was a highlight of Riga for us and the town hall Square is very central to the sights and attractions of Riga's old town. There are some good affordable souvenir shops to the northeast of here and there are some very good restaurants in seemingly every direction. We found ourselves walking through here quite a bit and it is nicely lit up at night too. The Town Hall is not open for visitors but there are some small attractions in front and below the Town Hall.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 April 2024
- GemsNIArmagh, United Kingdom663 contributionsGorgeous city, wonderful architectureStunning surroundings with beautifully historic buildings and wonderful history. Equally as lovely during day and night time strolling around. We followed a free walking tour audio guide which provided great historic information about the buildings, their inhabitants and purpose.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 October 2024
- Sergey KMoscow, Russia47,389 contributionsTown Hall SquareFor me, the Town Hall Square was a revelation, as I had not visited Riga since Soviet times, and in the meantime it was almost newly rebuilt, but the newly rebuilt buildings of the Town Hall, the House of Blackheads, the House of Schwabe with the Heraldic Commission and the Presidential Residence are replicas of ancient buildings. Only the House of Kamarin changed its appearance. During my visit to the square there was a concert with Ukrainian artists, so most of the square was occupied by the stage.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 27 October 2024
- Paul HBournemouth, United Kingdom1,882 contributionsTwo Ornate BuildingsThe square is all about one side of it essentially i.e., the side with The House of the Black Heads. Quite a nice ornate exterior. The Riga city sign for tourists to grab, jump upon, and stick their head through for selfies etc. is there too. A nice place to chill for 20 mins. or so.Visited September 2024Travelled soloWritten 5 January 2025

One of the symbolic buildings of the city, the history is interesting, it's a shame that the original was completely destroyed. Only an underground part remains which tells of the lifestyle of the Hanseatic traders. Of course, those coming from Italy are a little surprised that a warehouse is the oldest monument in the city. However, it is worth a visit.

The name of the magnificent house comes from the brothers of the black heads, a brotherhood of young merchants who used the place as a place of commerce and also of culture, and who chose Saint Maurice as their patron saint. Saint Maurice being Egyptian, he is represented with black skin, hence the name.
The visit is very interesting and despite the bombing and reconstruction, the bases have been preserved and beautifully which makes the visit to the basement the most interesting and rich. On the facade (magnificent) you will see statues like Neptune, Mercury and Saint George and at the entrance the painting of Saint Maurice and the Virgin Mary.

Riga's Town Hall Square was one of the most important square filled with market stalls, parades, tournaments, and performances.
Today, the city guests are welcomed by the historical facade of thr House of the Blackheads as well as the Town Hall. Roland Statue stands in the middle as the symbol of justice.

We passed by on a guided tour. I always recommend going with a guide, as the history of any place makes it all the more interesting.
The pictures of the square after the WWII and seeing it now leaves an impression. The story of the building itself was quite interesting too.

I was probably the oldest thing in this square when i visited as nearly all the buildings are carefully reconstructed reproductions of the originals that were destroyed in 1941. This really does feel old and you would never know unless you knew. A beautiful square.

The square is where buskers play to tourists. I heard an operatic rendition of Ava Maria followed by a cello playing U2. It was great. There are lots of cafes and bars nearby and it’s a few minutes from the water. A relaxed, pretty square, worth a visit.

If you are sightseeing in Riga this place is a must! There you can enjoy the beautiful view on outstanding buildings and Daugava river. There's also a possibility that you will be offered an excursion on a variety of languages or enjoy the live music. Some of the most interesting objects there are Blackheads house and the Christmas tree monument on the place where the first ever Christmas tree is believed to be placed. If you are visiting Riga in wintertime you can also observe the biggest Christmas tree in the country and also participate in a fun activity of putting your own decorations out there.

Nice town hall square, with The House of the Black Heads as a lovely focal point. Not quite as bustling as I was expecting it to be, but maybe it was the day and/or time we were there (weekdays in the afternoons, at the end of August). Kind of can't miss it if you're meandering around Old City Riga, which is a must if you're visiting Riga.

For me this is the main square. This is the square where the house of the blackheads is located. Once you have been to this square you feel like you have seen and had a feel of the city. Pity this square didnt have more seating to sit and enjoy it all.
More people milling around and enjoying the beautiful square.
More cafes and maybe icecream parlour should be erected here because of the traffic passing through.
A definite mist see square.

The buildings here are not as old as they look. The original buildings were destroyed during the Second World War. In the post-war years, some of the former buildings were reconstructed.
This important square houses the Town Hall, the House of Blackheads, and Roland's Statue. Museum of the Occupation of Latvia is located in an ugly cubic building from the 1970s.

I have found Rīga to be very beautiful and fun to walk around. We loved the old town, and also the beautiful and surprising art nouveau architecture. We took a boat ride also, and enjoyed it, although this ride was on the expensive side. We eat at great restaurants that served local food, and really loved the food, and the prices were very reasonable. We visited in the summer, therefore, I am not sure how the same experience will be in winter time. Maybe a local person can chime in.
