Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Most of the trains are outside so I guess it's possible to see those without paying the fee. You can go inside the trains only if you take part in a guided tour. Inside the building there's a lot about the history of Latvian railways but unfortunately most of the texts are not in English, only in Latvian.

This is over the river next to the National Library (take any tram or bus across the bridge, there is a stop opposite the entrance). I must admit that I was disappointed as there wasn't many engines here (only 3 steam engines). There was only one engine inside and some carriages which were interesting. The interior is mostly artefacts and a model railway which is fascinating. The main thing here is the chronicling of the railway's history though my latvian is not very good (there is some english translation in places). The sidings outside are the site of the engines, mostly from the USSR days and withdrawn from use in the 90's. The entrance fee is 6 euros.

Very friendly for families with children. The museum is very attractive for children. Children can play in the children's corner or play the circus in the big hall. Every hour there is a model train that everyone likes.

This museum is located next to the Latvian National Library.

It is always great to see real size old trains. Most of them are outside. However, you can get inside them only on guided tours.

The museum interior is quite small but there was a big miniature railway. We were lucky to be there just when it was turned on at 14:30. It happens every hour.

A smallish indoor exhibition area with most of the info in Latvian. The outside exhibition area is really good with a lot of various engines and equipment. Staff friendly and helpful. The museum also has the largest collection of coat hangers anywhere in the world!!

On our last day in Riga, we were looking for something to do so, out of desperation, we wandered into this museum. What a find! All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the exhibits were generally interactive and fun. For model railway fans, the huge set is turned on every hour and it was lovely to see how much the children there loved it.
Not a huge museum but a real treasure.

An 1.5 hour long visit is more than enough. There is a lot of information and a fair amount of interactive elements, as well as many trains to look at. Probably interesting enough for any age.

We spent two hours here with our two year old. Although the museum is rather small, it is very interactive, the little one was running around and pressing all the buttons. Plus he enjoyed the big trains on the show outside. Moreover, there's a small corner where he could play with the trains. We really recommend this museum.
