5 of us joined a cruise from Helsinki to Tallinn. We were lucky to be assigned a private tour guide by the name of Nils. Upon arrival at Tallinn, he welcomed us with a warm smile, a great start indeed! He was a great private tour guide. He brought us to all the interesting places of interest in Tallinn. During the entire walking tour, this young gentleman enlightened us with all the interesting history and facts about Estonia. He always volunteered to take group photos for us. He would also make sure to give us sufficient information about each place of interest and took care to explain to us the background history and details of each place. He was humorous and patient. We would like to THANK Nils again for making our day trip to Tallinn on 25 Dec an enjoyable, fun and memorable Christmas Day ! Hope he will be assigned to guide us around at our next visit to Estonia !

We have just revisited Tallin in the last two weeks, and wanted to pass on a tip to other cruisers who were wondering the best way to see the city. We were unable to get a place on or ships tours, as we had a wheelchair. This, as you can imagine is very difficult over the Old Towns cobbles, also for people who have any walking or balance problems. What I have to say will not please the cruise tours, but may help others. We got the shuttle bus to just outside the old town, and decided to ask the price of a taxi tour! We were told that it would depend on what we wanted to see, and the time. We explained as best we could - the lot! And waited! This will take an hour he said, and I'm afraid it will be 35 euro! After biting his hand off, we set off in his Merc. around The Old Tallin, taking in places that coaches could never reach, with many photo stops along the way, including a birds eye view of the old town. Breath taking!! Then we went around the new town taking in both the opera house, the 'dramatic' theatre as he called it, then the shopping area. Even though he spoke in very broken English, he was obviously proud of his towns, and was quickly at ease with us. We thought, this is great, but not over. He then took us out into the suburbs to see the enormous amphi theatre, built in grass tiers so that the public could literally picnic while watching concerts etc. It was also here that the world record for the largest choir was set. It may be even be larger than the Hollywood Bowl, I am not sure. The best was kept until last, with a visit to Peter the Greats Summer Palace, where we had a walk around the grounds/gardens. It was beautiful. He then asked if we wanted to be taken back to the ship, or dropped off somewhere? We had seen all we wanted, and were quite happy to pay him 40 euro. It was a very pleasant unrushed hour +, and I can honestly recommend it. English speaking guide - no. But it all added to the experience of enjoying a visit with a local who was proud to show you almost if not all, there was to see. Just make sure you can at least understand enough for your needs. Enjoy!!

Dear AnnFareham, their must have been a misunderstanding since we've never been in contact about any sightseeing tour with me as tour guide. Anyway: It's great you've enjoyed your stay in Tallinn. Regards from Estonia, Markus
