About
The Holocaust Memorial Center is a national institution established by the Government in 1999. In 2002, it decided to construct the building of the Center in Pava Street, outside of the traditional Jewish quarter, further emphasizing its national character. The Holocaust Memorial Center is one of the few institutions in the world, established by the state, that focuses entirely on Holocaust research and education. The visitors are welcomed into a unique space that was named as the most impressive in Budapest, beside the city's panorama itself by Frank Owen Gehry, one of the leading architects in our time. The modern building is organically linked to the Pava Street Synagogue, an authentic venue that once used to be the second largest site for Jewish worship in Budapest. The Institution is a center for scientific research education and culture. It welcomes visitors with interactive permanent and special periodic exhibitions, experience-based museum pedagogical programs and cultural performances. Guided tours are available in five languages and special, thematically focused tours are offered regularly. A bookshop and a cozy coffee shop contribute to a memorable visit.

- Michael ULas Vegas, Nevada43,745 contributionsPowerful images and wordsHoused in and below an early 1900's synagogue the Holocaust Memorial Center is a national institution built by the Hungairian Government in 2002. Focused on Holocaust research and education with design by Frank Gehry the Institution offers moving words from victims' families plus horrific footage telling a terrible history of Hungary's involvement. Guided tours are available, though exhibits are offered in Hungarian or English.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 26 June 2023
- Chris SEglinton, United Kingdom667 contributionsPowerful, evocative, very movingSpent a few hours in this centre today - about the Jewish & Romany people in Hungary before and during WW2. Very well presented (can follow the lives of several families all through the period), Very provocative and really makes one think, to say the least. Well worth the visitVisited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 September 2023

- sunnybrae2016Aberdeen, United Kingdom39 contributionsVery worthwhile visitI liked the way this museum presented the story through the eyes of families. The exhibition is very wordy but very well written. All panels have Hungarian and English and the audio sections also have an English option. A harrowing subject well presented. Take a coat - this is a cold experience. We were warned!Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 March 2024

Very moving place. Well worth a visit. I thought I knew a lot about the Holocaust in general but found it very interesting to learn more about how this affected Hungarian Jews. I learnt a lot from our visit today.

Informative and well structured. I very much enjoyed this visit, despite the subject. I particularly appreciated the handheld audio guides and there was plenty of visual and textual information. The staff were very nice and helpful.

This was quite hard to find so I'm glad we got a taxi - really tucked away. Whilst we found our visit really upsetting I do feel it was truly worthwhile.
The museum was incredibly informative and solemn - they treated the subject matter with great dignity and made no bones about providing the facts.
The information was incredibly in depth and they had lots of family records about those who lived (and didn't) through the persecution.
Dark lighting and sound effects of soldiers boots really drive everything home.
Both my mum and I had a little cry afterwards but were glad we went.

Visiting the Holocaust Memorial Center was an emotional and enlightening experience, unveiling the harrowing journey of Hungarian Jews and Roma during the darkest period of history. The center's narrative was vivid, tracing the gradual descent of these families into the unimaginable horrors of the Holocaust and the Porajmos.
What struck me most was the museum's unflinching honesty about Hungary's complicity in these atrocities. The acknowledgment of national shame was evident, making the experience deeply poignant. The stories of the selected families, their lives intertwined with tragedy, served as a powerful reminder of the human cost of hatred and prejudice.
Emerging from the depths of this despair, stepping into the renovated synagogue was nothing short of an epiphany. The contrast between the darkness of history and the glorious light and color of the synagogue was a symbol of hope and resilience, resonating deeply with the visitor.
However, a minor setback was the malfunctioning audioguide system accessed through a QR code. Despite this small inconvenience, the impact of the Holocaust Memorial Center's narrative remained undiminished, leaving a lasting impression on the soul. This museum stands as a poignant testament to the importance of remembrance and understanding in our shared human history.

There is a fee but it will not mean you have to skip a meal. They store your luggage also. It is on the way to and from the main airport. Plan about 2 hours to visit

I went today and was told no. There is an ATM 2 mins walk away, but the fees are ridiculous. However, there is a free ATM on the main road maybe 4 mins walk away.

How long would this museum take to have a good look, as a history teacher who already knows a fair bit about the holocaust but not specifically in Hungary?

If you teach history, you will want more than two hours to experience the significance of this place. It brings the trauma to life in a very unique way, and it causes the visitor to remember and feel the sorrow. It is a place for the brave to confront history that protects the future.

Hello, I am planning on going there in August with my family. Do you think it's too much for a 14 and a 12 year-old? I don't want to sugarcoat it but don't want to traumatized them either. It's really important for them to know and it's heavy stuff.
Thanks for input

Unless they are particularly sensitive they should be fine there are one or too disturbing photos but it is more about people's stories than anything else
